Sorry for the late reply - I have her isolated now and confirmed her crop is emptying normally. Her coughing and sneezing has resolved, so I thought she was improving, but yesterday I noticed a fair amount of swelling in her cheek and found a lesion in the soft tissue along her beak. Yesterday I...
I have this ~one year old hen who has been sneezing intermittently for the past couple of weeks, but wasn’t able to identify which hen it was and get my hands on her until a couple of days ago because she wouldn’t sneeze in front of me 😐 I have no idea what’s going on with her. She sounds raspy...
I know I may not know for sure for 6 more weeks, but I’m curious to see what the hivemind thinks.
I’ve got one with very distinctive wattles.
One with slightly pink ones.
One with small, but red tinted wattles.
And three with none at all.
Is it looking like a 50/50 split at this point?
That does make me feel better. I had 23/24 hatch a month ago, but even though I know it’s not realistic to keep those numbers, (especially since these were shipped eggs) I was still concerned it was something I did this time.
I kept 99.6 and 45% until day 18; 65% for lockdown. (Post hatch it...
I had a pretty successful hatch - 17/24 - but I lost two within the past few days, and I’m wondering if it’s anything I could have prevented so I might know better for next time.
The first one never internally pipped and hadn’t absorbed most of the yolk. This one did pip, but never made it out...
How early can we get an idea? These guys are just under four weeks old, and half have mullets and half have mohawks. Very curious if that may be an indicator this young :)
I hatched 17 silkies this weekend, and I’m obsessed with them. I have a few ideas about what color some of them may be, but I’d love some input from some more experienced eyes…they come from a mixed pen, so could be anything!
I have two of these!
This showgirl has a chipmunk pattern down her...
I have a 24 egg incubator this year (which I love so far) but I’m not sure how to handle candling with this many eggs! Last year it was only 7, so much easier to handle.
Would it be better to remove them all from the incubator at once to candle, or do 6 at a time?
I know that the temperature...
With an auto turner, it better to turn eggs 180 degrees or 45? Last year I did approximately 180 degree turns, and had just under a 50% hatch rate - I’m now questioning if I was turning them incorrectly and wondering what angle I should aim for this year: more of a gentle rock, or full flip? I’m...
She’s a year and a few months old, and has never had a laying problem until now. They do have access to oyster shell, but were recently swapped from layer feed to all flock so I’m not sure if they’re seeking out enough on their own.
I’ll get some calcium tablets, thank you! Even if she doesn’t...
Found my girl Beebalm with a ‘balloon’ of soft shell coming out of her vent today. We did a mild vinegar flush and were able to expel some feces, white eggy fluid, and I was able to massage the rest of the shell (right) out. It was leathery, rather than hard. Her vent was starting to get very...
