    Chicken Fight

The fight happened while they were free ranging... She is able to open her beak a little bit to drink and I will monitor her eating today.

    Chicken Fight

She did let me pick her up. I gave her some chamomile tea/honey water for inside her mouth. I cleaned under her beak with warm dish soap water and dabbed some blue kote on the swelling. Their seemed to be a brown scab covering the area.... Concerning for sure

    Chicken Fight

My girls got in a fight, and it looks like the salmon faverolles won. Is there anything I can do for them? It has been two days since the fight, and the Dominique just is not looking so hot. When I first noticed the fight happened I tried use warm water to gently compress the battle wounds, but...

So I was cleaning the chicken run when...

So this is the story of how I got a major spook doing some spring cleaning in the rabbit/chicken compound. I had already spent hours cleaning the pen, shoveling out winter straw from the covered portion of the run before I finally made it to the rabbit hutches. I peeled back the galvanized...

BLRW x ________ ... Which would you choose?!

Hey Chicken Genetics Experts! I have a beautiful BLRW rooster and an incubator that is rearing to go. He currently lives with 16 hens, and I fear that fertility is low because he is picking favorites. I am going to separate out Mr. Roo and was wondering what I can expect from the following...

    First Time Hatcher!

I've seen him go after a salmon faverolle and some SLWs, but it is hard to be sure with him. He's a big, beautiful boy, so we'd love to see some babies from him. If I could seperate him and a few girls I would, but we don't have anywhere to put them 🤨

    NOT FEELING SO GREAT

    First Time Hatcher!

UGH. That is what I was worried about. 4 of the eggs in the incubator are from my legbars, and I am just not seeing that. Maybe my light is not strong enough (she said hopefully?)

    First Time Hatcher!

Feeling disappointed in our rooster this morning. Eggs went in the incubator on the 4th, and i'm not seeing much of anything from any of the 10 eggs I put in. I was hoping all that crowing was going to be worth something 🙃 At what point should I give up on these eggs?

    First Time Hatcher!

So I don't know if it's the quarantine getting to our heads, but we've decided to try hatching out our own eggs. That's right. Moose the Rooster (BLR Wyandotte) is going to be a father... problem is, he's got 16 girlfriends. SO i'm expecting low fertility %, unless Moose the Rooster is reallllly...

    Chicken Math Strikes Again

I'm REALLY crossing my fingers I don't end up with another Cockerel this year. We've already got one (Moose)... He's enough! Poor Butters last year went straight to the soup pot... I'm fortunate to live in a rural town (however we are in a neighborhood). We bribe the neighbors with eggs...

    Move Chicks Outside?

I start my chicks indoors in a converted rubbermaid tub with a hardware cloth lid. At about 2-3 weeks (this year that will be about the 2nd week of May), I move them outside into a dog crate wrapped in hardware cloth. We use infrared heat lamps, but have used red heat lamps in the past. We live...
