New to broody hens and silkie mixes

This is also her first time even attempting to go broody, so I’m pretty excited! Trying not to get my hopes up too high, but it’s hard not to.

New to broody hens and silkie mixes

My Plymouth Rock hen named Jelly (the one in my profile picture actually) has decided to sit on a couple of my barnyard mix’s eggs. Jelly unfortunately has scoliosis, so I will not be allowing her to hatch out her own eggs, just because I don’t want the deformity to be passed down. I am just...

    Any experience with Buff Orpingtons?

If you treat them like pets, they produce better eggs ^^ cuddles and snacks make them feel more comfortable, and increases egg production! Of course you don’t have to do any of that if you don’t want to, but they do make great pets if your daughter wants to cuddle them every once in a while.

    Any experience with Buff Orpingtons?

Usually, my BO is pretty consistent with laying, even as it gets colder. Right now, she’s starting to molt, so her production has gone down a lot, but she would normally give me 4-6 eggs per week. She has gone broody a couple of times, but she’s not mean or anything. She was pretty easy to break...

Call duck Eggs wiggle but no internal pip Day 25

Yeah, they do often take breaks, and some are longer than others. If you are concerned that the baby has given up, I would suggest assisting. If you will see occasional movement, even if there are a few minutes in between movements, it usually means the baby is just tired. Bringing yourself into...

Call duck Eggs wiggle but no internal pip Day 25

They will be pretty small peeps, so you would need to be pretty close to hear them if your incubator is loud haha. I could hear mine from a good ten feet away when they really got going inside their shells, but that’s probably just because my house was dead silent when they started to hatch. You...

Call duck Eggs wiggle but no internal pip Day 25

I would still recommend checking between 12 and 24 hours from now. You will probably hear some noises within the egg that will indicate that the baby is starting to poke its way through, so definitely listen for those! My babies started peeping about 24 hours before they hatched

Call duck Eggs wiggle but no internal pip Day 25

Slight wobble is okay at this point. The baby should be in position now, and is likely just trying to break through the membrane of the egg. I would keep an eye on the egg just in case, maybe check in on it in another 24 hours. It takes around 12-36 hours for a baby to externally pip after...

Call duck Eggs wiggle but no internal pip Day 25

I would suggest very carefully candling the egg, check for signs of internal pipping and movement. I’ve seen mixed reviews on safety holes as well, but I think I’ve seen more good reviews than bad ones on here. I would certainly look into it more if I were you. Research is the most important...
