This was our first time raising chicks and definitely an interesting experience! We had them in a "brooder" and then took them outside. Although they were not kept confined to a coup they were inside a small fence so I kept food in there for them. I have taken them off of medicated feed already...
I had all my chicks on medicated feed this spring. We ended up with a couple roosters out of the batch we hatched. How long do they need to be off of medicated feed before they are safe for consumption? I tried looking on the feed bag but could not find anything. Thanks for any help.
I started with hens because I thought they would be heartier (since it's winter) than chicks and be easier to get started with. We also had trouble finding any local golden comets for sale. Plan is to see if it's something my wife/son will stick with and enjoy and if so we will get a rooster and...
Yesterday I purchased 3 Golden Comets hens from a local farmer. He said they were around 2 years old. At the time they were in a livestock trailer with about 30 other birds. He grabbed them by the feet and carried them out of the trailer. I didn't notice anything obviously wrong with any of them...
A breeding question I was curious about (forgive me if this is a novice question). If I get a rooster and hen and allow her to hatch out chicks....will the cockerels breed the chicks upon maturation? I was not sure if this would happen and/or if this would cause any genetic issues.
So a good broody hen will hatch/raise the chicks with no help needed? I was not real sure how much assistance would be required. Will the chicks survive in the coop through the winter or would they need a heat source? I am also trying to build a coop on a budget, would an old trampoline mesh...
Thank you Mrs K. I'm thinking your right on skipping to rooster the first year. My original plan was mature hens only and collect eggs, then cull them in the fall and start over again next spring. My wife suggested she would like to see some eggs hatched so the rooster came into the plan. I...
I like the look of your run, I was thinking of doing something similar. What kind of wire fencing is that and does it keep out smaller predators like mink and weasels? Looks like there is some reinforced wire at the bottom (sorry, I'm viewing from a phone screen)?
If I go away for a week and my neighbor takes care of food and water, would they be content in the coop all day/night? This is obviously assuming they have food/water and proper ventilation.
Thanks for helping with my questions. I'm sure I will have more as I get farther into building the coop and start bringing the birds in. So nice to find such a helpful site.
New to chickens and the BYC site, happened to find it from another thread. Appears to be very useful for newbies like me and from the posts that I have seen everyone appears very friendly and helpful. I have 5 acres in a rural area of Southern Indiana. I'm looking to buy a few (I'm thinking 5 or...
