Been crazy around here but I wanted to stop in and kinda finish this thread. I had an 80% hatch and survive rate, chicks have been happy in the brooder! Didn't really see any problems with any of them, just a couple eggs that never hatched. That's pretty awesome in my opinion!
Hi! Just wanted to say I've got chicks hatching, one big silver-laced Wyandotte decided to come early this morning, and my BO/Wyandotte cross is almost completely unzipped. Most pipped early this morning and are making a lot of noise now (technically due tomorrow). I may need to recalibrate...
Thanks, I'll update when things start happening (or don't happen). Its only a couple more days so if I get 2 hatch out it'll be worth it. No difference in setting up the brooder anyway. After day 22 or 23 Im gonna clean that bator and put in more asap, just hand turning. Even if I get a...
I have a still-air bator and similar problems with my house not having a room that's stable temp. My first time I only set 6 eggs because I was worried. Im a stay at home mom, so I watched them like a hawk. Kept the temp between 99 and 102.5. Was careful about humidity. Had 100% success...
So I've got a still air incubator and went and found a used turner since I knew I needed to be gone several days. Plugged it in, seemed to work fine. I still marked the eggs so I could check it was working, being used. Anyway, appeared to be no problems, I left on day 9 of incubation, returned...
Can I just say, I REALLY REALLY REALLY miss my hen that would go broody, always hatched out all the eggs or almost all, and was such a good momma......shame on people who dump their dogs near my house because the Humane Society is so close by here, my fence just wasn't enough at the time....
Thank you so much. I'll look up salt test asap. I've now learned that the thermometer built in is total rubbish, and can't be calibrated, but I have one that is calibrated (it slides on a card with marked temps, so its easy to get right then secure) Its sitting on a rolled up washcloth so its...
Ok, so my still-air incubator I got for dang near free has been on for 2 days now, temp has settled right at 101. Im really nervous to set eggs in it though. lol. I've got my own hens and roos, so I'll be using their eggs this first time. Im REALLY nervous. I don't have an auto-turner, but...
I had a broody that hatched out several eggs from our flock, and when hers were a week old I added day old chicks. Just my experience, I did it middle of the day and just turned them loose next to her and she dang near attacked me for being near "her" chicks. You see all of the chicks were hers...
Me. I have a horned buck and a horned doling who will be a FF in a couple weeks. I also have a disbudded doe who is a full-sized. (the other 2 are 1/2 dwarf) I have NO problem with them at all. In fact it helps them hold their own against our big goat. I did worry at first that it would be...
I have 13 chicks, that will be separated from my grown hens, and Im wondering when I can move them outside? Currently they are *technically* outside, in my shop, there is no heat there, but its fully insulated and they have a heat lamp. I want to move them to their regular pen and house. They...
Haven't had to disbudd yet, and probably won't. I have 2 young goats I just bought that live with my full grown Saneen(sp?) She is polled. They use their horns for everything from scratching their backs to tossing hay around. Even the buckling has horns, although I may regret that later...
Sorry, she looks so tiny but just weighed her and she's almost 40lbs, so not as bad as I thought, but not really up to par I think.. She' is a Nigirian Dwarf crossed with a full Alpine I believe (and thats what I was told anyway), and at this age she is the same height as the Nigi's she was...
Thank you! I'll watch her so see if anything changes. Ya, thats kinda what I thought about "no one seeing anything" lol She is just so tiny, maybe 30 lbs right now, so Im giving her the feed she needs, as well as lots of good hay (unlimited) and her vaccinations just like if she were...
