    The fleshy part above their beak on their head. With hens it turns red when they are old enough to lay. If you look at my picture, my chick's is turning red now so she is probably a he. The males turn red sooner.

    And junebuggena, it makes sense because the 2 barred rock chick's we got along side this guy have pale combs. I wasn't sure if it was just because of them being different breeds.

    :( ok, thank you. A flock of 5 will have to do then. Hopefully I can find a local farm that will take him in since we can't have roosters in the backyard! :(

    :( I wish we were allowed to have roosters. As a chick this one would sleep in my hand and loved being carried. How can you tell? I'm semi new to chickens and brand new to roosters!
