    Nasty Butts

Thanks, dawg53. They don't seem to be particularly stinky. :)

    Nasty Butts

Thanks for the reply, Wyorp Rock. It isn't a "runny mess", but does look kind of wet sometimes. It is streaks of what is usually dry looking white poo. Doesn't really look like the photo above, or any photos of Vent Gleet I've seen. I don't have any photos, and these girls are runners the second...

    Nasty Butts

I have 7, 9 month old Barred Plymouth Rock hens. In the last couple of weeks, several of them have constantly dirty butts, covered in poo. All have bright red, healthy-looking combs and wattles, feathers are healthy looking, no loss of, or increase in appetite, all are still foraging like crazy...

    Nest Competition

aart, I hadn't thought of that. Great idea! As it turns out, I think the fight is over, with no winner. This morning, I had the usual 2 eggs, one in each of two nests, neither one in the preferred nest. Crazy birds!

    Nest Competition

Thanks, azygous. I know stress will effect laying and/or quality of an egg. Just wanted a bit of reassurance, I guess, that this is likely what is going on. I'll try pulling #2 from the nest tomorrow morning and putting her elsewhere if she is in with the other hen. It sure can't hurt! I need...

    Nest Competition

We have 7, 6 month old Barred Plymouth Rock hens and 2 Roosters the same age. We were supposed to have rehomed the 2nd roo by now, but that fell through. I'm fully aware that 7 hens aren't enough ladies to go around for 2 gents, but they boys seem to have established their pecking (or mounting?)...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

Thanks, Eggcessive. I'm relieved, for sure! My intent was to raise these birds as livestock, but when you raise them from day old chicks, you can't help but fall for them. I still don't treat them as "pets", haven't named them and won't, but I do seem to worry over them like they are my kids...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

That's actually fascinating! Thanks for sharing it. :)

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

UPDATE: This little hen has had no further issues. Once everyone decided to come out of the coop (6 days of self imposed exile from the great outdoors), things went back to normal within a few days. No other chickens have shown any symptoms or had any problems. In fact, we got our first egg...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

Eggcessive, we don't have a wire dog crate. I can separate him with his own food and water within the chicken house, though. Planning on getting the vitamin my next trip to town. We live way out in the mountains, so "running to the store" when we need something, even "chicken medicine" isn't...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

Thanks, Shadrach. I'll always give an animal a chance. He has just been doing what young, hormonal cockerels do. Now that they're out doing their thing this morning, he is crowing far less, and the ladies have plenty of escape routes! :) Maybe they can get rested and de-stress a bit. By the...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

I got these as day old chicks from a hatchery. That could mean really crappy hatching conditions, or decent ones. Who knows for sure? She is the smallest of the hens for sure. She wasn't at first. There was actually a smaller one I dubbed "Runt", who is hard to identify from the rest of the...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

I plan to have the hubby section off part of the coop. Thanks so much!

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

Yes, he's the same age and relentlessly hormonal! We still have snow all over, although it is VERY slowly melting. They are still sticking to the indoors by choice. The ladies are all perching wherever they can to avoid him and are even having to grab a "bite to eat" then run off when he comes...

Chicken Seems to be having seizures?

UPDATE: As of this morning, the hen seemed perfectly fine. I checked on her/them several times today, taking time to stand and watch for a while to be sure. It's like nothing ever happened. All of the other chickens are fine, too. Just SO tired of being stuck in the house/yard. Hoping all this...
