Can someone confirm this is bumblefoot? I have read up on this disease and possible ways to "cure" it, but does anyone have any tips or other suggestions? Thanks so much for the help!!!
It was a hawk. We found it yesturday eating a secong hen. We walked up on it, it kept eating and finally flew off. If I had my 22, the hawk would be done. Anyway, we put up a net over the run. The hawk found it's way in!!! I've got to go down again today and secure it better. Darn thing...
There is no cover over the run. It is 6' high, about 20x20 with wooden bottom. I have seen a hawk flying over in the past, but the hens usually scatter and bolt into the house when they see it coming. I guess one didn't make it this time.
I came home today to find one of my RIRs killed in the run. It's neck and head was stripped of feathers and head mostly gone. There was no breach in the security of the fence or door. What happened here? Was it killed by a flying predator? Was it killed by one of it's own? After I removed...
My Black Australorp "Bessie" sat in broody for 6-8 weeks. She finally came our last week. Next, a RIR "Chester" is now taking her turn. It's been a week. I take her out and toss her into the run for treats. I can reach under her for the eggs. So, just give it time, I guess it's normal and...
My chickens are always outside when it rains. They must like the shower. Unless it is really heavy and thunder, they will stay outside. They might have better luck finding bugs and worms in the rain. I don't think they will get sick. Usually, their instinct will take over if they need to go in.
I was going to ask the same question about the scale!!! I have to have one!!!!
Congrats on the first egg. I removed the innards and saved the shell in a glass jar.
Thanks for all the good information. She is a Black Australorp. I have 3 of the same, but only one is broody. Some days there is no egg under her and I do not have a rooster. I will try to break her of the habit by placing her in the yard and see if that works. I'm assuming she's getting...
OK, so I suppose it's ok to reach under her and take her baby? That's how
I've been doing it and she hasn't chased me out of there yet! Poor thing.....
I have 12 hens but one is always in the nest trying to hatch an egg. I feel bad for her. She is always there when I go down to the coop. Is she trying to have a baby, lonely, anti-social, or what???? She seems healthy. Strange behavior indeed. Thanks for the help. -Brian.
I have 1/2 a bag of layer mash from last year. It was kept open in my shed over the winter. It smells like sour milk. Do you think it's ok to feed the chickens? Is this smell normal? Thanks.
