    ala natural is not working.

Howdy, A few weeks ago I posted a couple questions regarding letting my hens lay and hatch natural. Something went wrong. First...there were usually at least 2 and often times 3 hens on the one nest. I initially thought...ok...this will be a community effort. Well, this past weekend I...

    Ala natural questions/suggestions/advice

Hello all. I found this forum very helpful over the past year altho I have been AWOL for a while. I've breezed thru 8 of 650 pages looking for information...I figured I'd go ahead and just ask some questions & solicit some advice...even tho the info is probably burried in one of these...

A bale of hay in the coop for winter (?)

JB, At least my chickens, LOVE alfalfa!!!! I have horses and used to gather up some of the leaves and feed it to the birds as a treat. They went nuts over it. I would NOT use alfalfa. Now...I have also put a grass hay in the coop and like others have said, they scratch at it and it...

    RAILROAD TIES?!?!?

Come on folks...he's talking about fence posts...not making feeders out of the things. LOL I have a barn made out of rough-cut telephone poles. While the creosote aroma still lingers a bit, it's quite beautiful wood. I also use some for my deack boards and just made an outhouse for my WI/MN...

Adding a light to the coop

Quote: Try a rope light or two. I used two for my 5x10. It's a nice soft light, but not too bright. I have just a standard lamp timer and have it come on at 4-5 in the morning. I peek in on them sometimes and some are eating or hanging out on the roost.

Help me trouble shoot my light issues please!

I do some extra light myself for now, but do it in the morning. Let them roost in the evening naturally. As far as the light itself, I'd imagine they will get used to it in time. Depending on how long it's been in there...they may not be used to it yet. I have noticed that my flock HATES...

Can an EE's lay brown eggs?

I wondered the same thing and posted a question about that in a previous thread. My EE'r has been the first to lay...about 5 of 7 days...I got a cream/light brown one day and wondered if she could lay that or if a Bramha roo could have caused a shell color change. However, the next day I came...

I do not like green eggs and ham

Quote: Your EE'r lays cream colored eggs? I was going to post a question regarding this. My EE'r had laid 7 straight tinted eggs...until yesterday. I found a cream/light tan colored egg last night. Now...as you can see below, I have a mixed flock and some should lay cream/light tan colored...

Hanging Automatic Waterer Installation More Help Needed

Susan, I'm glad my pic gave you some ideas. If you run into any mounting issues, let me know. BTW...the cooler full of water lasted about 3-4 weeks first time around during a VERY HOT summer here in the DFW area. Stuart

    Roost question?

FWIW... I am using 2x2's and they seem fine with it. Of course, they all want to be on the highest roost and that worked for a while...now that they are larger...some are having to drop down one...and I suspect they aren't happy about it. LOL

Does anyone have pics, of their waterers and feeders!

JoeB, I did some searching and while I found Cutlers to have a better price, they were VERY high on shipping charges. I found Jeffers to be a dollar more but shipping was a lot less. It arrived within 3 days I believe. Post some pics when you get it up and running.

Does anyone have pics, of their waterers and feeders!

I was in Walmart a month or so ago and saw the big cooler...a garden hose screws onto the drain. The little giant fountain is a low pressure waterer carried by many places. I just connected the two with a garden hose. I did buy an adapter to go from the hose to the waterer...no big deal. I...
