One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

Another forum member suggested the garbage bag thing too, so we might try that! I appreciate the suggestions. I think we can immobilize her if we can just get our mitts on her. It's going to be a two-person job, though, and I am SUPER bug phobic so I'd need to figure out how to do it without...

Thanks, friends! The spray is FlyRid Plus, which is a .5% permethrin spray that is supposed to be safe to use directly on the chickens as well as their habitats. Our problem with Red is that we can't get close enough to her to touch her, and our roost is so hard to get to that we can't do...

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

UPDATE: So my husband did The Big Coop Clean yesterday. He burned the old shavings and straw, used the shop vac to super clean the roost, and sprayed permethrin spray all over the roost and the wood frame of the coop. Then, when it was dry, he sprinkled poultry dust on the floor of the coop...

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

Thanks so much, deacons! Andy and Red stayed very close to the house (the deck, the garage, the driveway), so in that way, I guess Andy did have some leadership skills. After Brad got eaten by a fox in the woods, she seemed to realize "woods bad! yard good!" And then Red is afraid of the...

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

I have been quite worried about our one remaining chicken - the scaredy-cat, Red. Twice since Saturday, when Andy died, I have seen her come down out of the roost to eat and drink, so at least she's able to do that much. Otherwise, though, she is staying in the roost 24/7. Poor chicken! :(...

Thank you so much, Wyandottes7 and BantamLover21!

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

Thanks, TwoCrows! I'm a detail person, so reading all these "dust the coop and the chickens" pages doesn't help me because it doesn't tell me how much, or how often, or HOW. So I appreciate you talking through the nitty-gritty details with me. Our coop/roost combo is a little unusual, I guess...

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

Perhaps a dumb question, but I can't find the answer in my reading: Once I dust the floor and walls of the roost, do I just leave it there and put new bedding down? Can I mix a little of that dusting powder (permethrin .25% - that is "point two-five" not "twenty-five") percent in with the...

I would never have thought of that! :) And good idea about checking for powder/water ratio. Thank you! :)

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

We can do that! I think we are going to switch from straw to wood shavings and put a layer of sand on both the coop floor and in our roost. I will continue to look for spray permethrin. Maybe I can use the kind designed for spraying on tents and camping clothes? That is all I see for sale at...

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

I got "garden and poultry dusting powder" at Agway this afternoon, and I can put it on the floor of our "roost" which is a 3' x 3' raised box inside the coop. I can't figure out how to get it on the walls though. And a pound covers 100 chickens when used as a dusting powder so I don't know how...

Do you have a recommendation for permethrin spray? I can only find ones to put on clothing. I found some dusting powder. But I can't figure out how to use that in the roost without it touching the nesting material. Thank you!

Thank you for replying, Mountain Peeps! I spoke with a well-regarded chicken supplier a few minutes ago, and I think we will have to give up on the silkie dream, at least for now. I do not feel equipped to raise chicks, which seem to be all that's available in my area. Instead, we may choose...

One sad little chicken (and my hen is upset too!)

Hi! First post, new member. :) Read on for the TL;DR details, but here's my short question: Can I introduce juvenile silkies (6-10 weeks old) to a coop/roost with one approx. 18 month old Rhode Island Red hybrid? Will they make a flock even though they are different types? We inherited...
