My girls are very young. They've only just started laying and even though initially there were a couple of eggs in the nest the silly goose wasn't sitting on them?! 🙄😂
I gently shooed them off the nest with a broom and then covered the nest so they can't see or access it ... They weren't very happy with me but I think we'll be okay ☺️.
Hi everyone, I have two broody geese sitting on an empty nest. How do I stop them being broody without making them hate me?
I saw a thread that says dismantle the nest and/or remove them from the nest repeatedly, but how do you do that when they're hissing and biting you? Or is it just a case...
Very informative ... I'd just like to add that if you pick up a hen and she starts squawking, calm her down -stroking her, talking calmly, etc - before putting her down so that your rooster sees that you aren't harming her. He's less likely to react.
🤣🤣🤣 ... While I understand how you feel I highly suggest you get to know your girls' nethers before there's an issue that way you can tell when something is not quite right and knows if actio is required on your part ...
What a lovely, well written article! Thoroughly enjoyed reading it 👍
Just a little sidebar - I've found that by not "forcing" my hens to lay through Winter with artificial lighting keeps them laying longer (for obvious reasons) and they live longer too ... My elderly ladies pick up their...
Yes we get both here, although I'm almost 100% certain that it's not coccidiosis because there's no evidence of bloody poop.
But I'll eliminate all possibilities because I'm really tired of loosing birds.
I'm actually not a fan of the broiler industry and would ideally like to find an...
Hi everyone,
Feedback please ...
It's the 5th time I'm raising meat birds from day old and I've always experienced "unexplained" deaths i.e I'll just find a dead bird in the shed.
I buy from a reputable supplier, I use quality feed (starter, grower and finisher). I use shavings (deep litter...
I feel the same way about my roosters ... They're an asset to my homestead. They also sit with me and let me pick them up for scratches ... My hens aren't nearly as friendly?! 😅
In my experience, cull ... I've had the odd "egg eater" and I've tried all the recommended methods to stop her. They work for a week or two, but then she's back to her ol' habits. So now I just cull 🤷
I just have a treat (cracked corn) that I only use to "coop my chickens" ... I shake the tin and call them (koek koek koek) and they come running ....🤷 🤨🤔
My issue isn't whether the young ones are laying (or about to), but rather the older girls... I've definitely got a few freeloaders that are due for an examination.
About the wattles, I've always had one or two excellent layers who's wattles are small and pale. At the moment I have one. I call...
