*I am not a vet, everything here is from personal experience and Googling* I wanted to share the story of one of my chicks in case in helps someone else. From the incubator this chick exhibited what looked like a soaking wet back end that appeared to be due to clear or yellowish liquid leaking...
Ok so update to my yolks issue, months later. I supplemented their feed with flax meal and then switched to a higher protien feed (feather fixer) and the yolks are back to a dark orange. Probably took a week, so I think it was due to a protein shortage.
Cavemanrich was exactly right about the...
After doing extensive research on this website and with Harvey Ussery's book, I think I have two issues. One of my chickens does appear to be such sick, so she's separated until I can figure that out, but the pale yolks i think are a totally separate thing.
Once the pandemic left us doing...
Thanks for your reply cavemanrich! I have a buff orpington (she's fine), cuckoo marans, cream legbars, a speckled sussex, and a few bantams that are fine. So kind of fancy meat breeds for the most part. Now that I'm thinking about it, the legbars have slowed but not stopped, so maybe I wouldn't...
Help! My hens are 7 months old and started laying about 2 months ago in abundance. Over the past 2 weeks 4 of my hens seem to have stopped completely. They have pale combs, poop looks normal, no mites that I can see, vents look fine, eating and drinking well. They free range during the day. They...
I'm in the same boat. Only ONE of my 9 hens is laying on a regular basis (~5 eggs per week) and the other eight have produced not a single egg in about 4 months. They all molted, suffered a respiratory virus due to a new pullet in the flock that was brought on my a dog attack which scared the...
YES my thoughts exactly about the leghorn. UGH! I lost my rooster just 2 weeks ago to a fox. He bravely faced the fox and got it to drop the hen that was in his teeth. I would have loved to have seen the dog face my rooster. His spurs were 6 inches long! I'm in the market for a new one...
Thank you so much everyone for your support and great solutions. I really appreciate all of you taking the time to empathize with me and offer such specific actionable paths forward. Having a place to vent my frustrations has really helped me cool off and look at the situation more...
My town doesn't have leash laws, so situations like this are pretty commonplace.
Thanks for the reply. You're right the main issue is that the dog was on my property. If the dog killed a hen on their property, that's my problem not theirs. Right now they are being cooperative and trying to...
Update:
After 1 week of rest, and 1 week of Metacam, the hen showed no improvement. Still eating and drinking, but unable to use her legs to balance. I let her hang with her friends for a bit before dispatching her.
I live in a suburban area where lot sizes are a couple of acres. My neighbor's dog tends to roam a bit, which never bothered me until yesterday when he killed one of my hens. He wasn't playing, he went full predator focused crazy on this hen. My neighbor helped me chase the dog down, so she...
I have a hen with a fox-induced brain injury. She appears to have full strength in her right half, but lacking in ability to use muscles appropriately. My vet friend tells me it's hemiparesis, meaning brain damage has caused nerve issues in her right half. She can't walk, so I've been using a...
My eggs are on day 9. They were shipped and their air cells looked a little wonky, so I kept them in the carton fat end up in the incubator and put them in the egg turner on day 6. Now that I'm candling the eggs, they all seem to be doing fine and growing, but one of the eggs has an air cell...
My Mille Fleur ended up pulling through just fine. A detail I left out is that I THINK the flock was attacked by a hawk just before she fell ill, so I wonder if the stress of the situation caused her GI tract to stall for a couple of days. She was back pecking in the yard as healthy as ever...
I'm looking for one or two bantam frizzle hens to add to my small (literally, ha!) flock. Does anyone know of a local bantam farm or organization I could call to find out?
