Yes she lets me pat her and put my hands underneath her, she growls sometimes but has never pecked me. Another question.... she has stopped touching baby but is pecking quite hard at a pipped egg.... is this normal?
Thanks, My girls name is Beaker (fitting) she seems to have settled down now and I have left everything be. I'm just super nervous about these babies because unfortunately my dog killed their dad a couple of weeks ago and these babies will be his only offspring. I'm really hoping we will end up...
Hi, I have a Mum sitting on now 5 eggs and 1 chick has hatched. She keeps pecking at the baby on the head which is making it squeal. I don't know if she is doing this because she is protecting it from me and trying to get it back under her or if she may actually be trying to hurt it. She doesn't...
I did. I even gave it a quick rub to try get things moving like it was a puppy but there was no response. All a learning curve. This is my first hatch and beak getting stuck is prob the only thing I haven't read about.
Thankyou all for your quick responses. I do however wish my question was asked quicker. I'm pretty sure the baby died shortly after I posted as I noticed beak stopped moving. Thankyou all anyway. I will ask sooner next time. There is 1 egg left to hatch let's hope that goes smoothly.
This baby has been seemingly stuck with its beak out the pip hole for about 18 hours or longer. I started to assist hatch this morning because I honestly thought it was dead but when I saw it move its beak open to breathe I put it back in incubator. Do I need to keep helping?? I doesn't retract...
I found I could lift/part feathers ok. My girls and boy are very used to being handled, so they mainly stand still but to go looking for something I haven't looked for before I think I might need 4 hands. Will let you know how I get on tomorrow. Thx again.
Now you have said that I will have another look tomorrow when my daughter can hold them still for me. It seemed quite clear as I was fairly sure who was laying already but will check pelvic points as well. Thanks for your help. I am very new at this and love my girls and boy. I want to know...
Thanks for the info. I didn't need to feel around for pelvic points as it was quite clear from Butt checks that 2 are laying. No soft eggs today and only 1 regular egg, maybe the softies were from the one that hasn't been laying regularly yet. Hopefully I will get normal eggs from her soon. Thx...
Has anyone had any experience with crossing these two breeds? We have 4 Australorps 3 black and 1 Splash and a what I am told is a Pekin Bantam Roo, Buff coloured. The pullets only started laying two days ago so won't attempt to hatch eggs yet as they are still small but I did see a mating...
I have 4 X 18 weeks old Australorps. At least 1 is laying and I think I know which one. 1 maybe 2 are also close and the 4th chook is miles behind development wise ( not a sibling to the other 3 ). Was surprised to find first egg yesterday and another today. Small but perfect eggs! When I got...
I just read something on here from 2010 saying Vicks shouldn't be used on chickens. If you do it and it hasn't caused you any problems I think I will give it a go though. Thankyou for all your help. Getting these Chics has been a very interesting and at times a very trying experience. I am...
I'm not sure what vet Rx is. I can get vapour rub though. How would I do that?? I had to put my frizzle down 3 weeks ago because she got very sick very quick. I would love to keep the ones I have left and get them healthy if I can. I will try anything.
Thankyou all for your help. It is the Oxy B I have got. I will use is as the sole water source for them for the 5 days. I hope they get better soon, while they havn't got any worse they don't seem much better yet. Fingers crossed. :)
