Sorry I should have explained - they free range all day. They usually don't even finish the pellets that I give them because they're too busy free ranging all over the yard and garden
When I've offered oyster shells before, no one seemed interested. I toss out there pellets daily verses providing a constant supply in a feeder because otherwise I'm also feeding the neighborhood flock of crows ... My girls love them some yogurt though lol
My Black Laced Red Wyandotte has always been the beauty of the flock and not so much known for her laying compared to the other three girls ( a Barred Rock and two Easter Eggers) but nevertheless we've been able to count on 3 or 4 eggs a week from her when it's laying season or she is not on...
I am having a similar problem with a two year old hen. She's a black laced red Wyandotte... Not as prolific a layer as my other three (a Barred Rock and two Easter Eggers) but still has been pretty consistent, laying 3 or 4 eggs a week. Took the winter off and now that it's laying season again...
A "start up glitch".... I like that :) I think there was a little membrane. When I was washing the other eggs there was something stuck on one that could have been that. Pox has a pretty fluffy backside and doesn't care to be handled much at all so I just tried to peek at it. It looked the way...
My girls are 2 years old (today actually! Happy Birthday Ladies!) There are four of them and all but one (my Gold-lace Wyandotte, "Pox") are laying.
Today I was working in the yard and Pox came out of the henhouse singing the egg song so I went to check and there was egg yolk all over the eggs...
I've been wondering if it would be a good idea to build a small flock 2 at a time for a few years. I have four hens now which is a good number for my little household but I've been thinking: eventually they will all stop laying and I will just have a retirement home for four hens.
Curious what...
I bought a used prefab for $40 and put it on pier blocks so it's up off the ground a little. Also it's in the middle of a large run so it works well for my 4 hens but I agree with you, it has definitely been a good "trainer" coop. I will do things differently when I build my "dream coop" and I...

I also had a fire with a heat lamp. Burnt a hole in the floor of my shed, by some miracle the fire put itself out before it found the gas can and plenty of other flammable items. After that I suspended the heat lamp by a chain hanging from the ceiling of the shed. No problems after that.
