Help! Lothargic and puffed up hen

Her legs look okay, I think. I'll look a little closer when I get home. Will the leg mites spread to the other chickens and how do they get them? I am going to clean the coop out really good again this weekend too. It's actually going to be better weather I believe this weekend it's been cold...

Help! Lothargic and puffed up hen

UPDATE: Henny Penny is still not quite 100%. She is scratching around and has been going out into the run with the other girls everyday, but, she hasn't been jumping up on any of the roost areas at night, she's just huddling down on the floor in the corner and is still having a bit of watery...

Help! Lothargic and puffed up hen

So, I kept Henny Penny inside for the weekend and returned her to the coop yesterday afternoon. She isn't quite 100% yet, but, she was starting to move around and eat and drink all on her own and her poop seems to be returning to normal. She also isn't laying around all puffed up anymore. I...

Help! Lothargic and puffed up hen

I'm having a similar problem in one of my hens, she's about 5 years old. I've brought her inside and I gave her a 20 minute soak in a warm bath and got her to drink some water, but, I just checked on her and she seems the same still. She won't eat anything. I'm really not sure what to do either.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Congratulations! I still use sand in my run, I love it. Works great, no smell, easy to clean and rake, and keeps the girls nails neat a tidy. We bought "washed sand" or commonly referred to as "levelling sand" from a local supplier. It doesn't wash away as easily as masonry sand and is also much...

looking for fellow Alberta chicken freaks!

I went to the Westlock Odd & Unusual sale today. What an excellent Saturday! I could have come home with SO MUCH, but, I resisted. Lol. I did come home with a lovely 1 year old speckled Sussex hen. I'm so excited, she's just a lovely little bird adds a splash of color to my otherwise plain jane...

looking for fellow Alberta chicken freaks!

Does anybody here go to the Odd & Unusual Sale in Westlock? I've heard there's all kinds of chickens for sale, but, I've never been. I believe the next sale is April 25.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

We got washed sand from a local landscaping supply company. Depending on how much you require, it will be awfully expensive to buy it by the bag at the hardware store. We used a lot more sand than I thought we were going to once it actually came down to measuring out the space and depth. We...

looking for fellow Alberta chicken freaks!

Hello Alberta Chicken Peeps! I'm a little late to the party LOL but, I'm also just a few minutes west of Stony Plain! How's everybody enjoying this weather? I'll tell you my hens are lovin' it!

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

That's a good question. I mix some DE in with their sand in the run and I put some in their coop where we are still currently using wood shavings. It is a very fine product which is obviously why it is super dusty. I don't use very much of it (not sure exactly how much I just toss some around...

Missing feather's from back at base of tail! Bareback chickens?!?!?!

I'm not sure about putting them back together as my girls were never separated, but, with the saddles on them it took a while for the feathers to grow back, but, they did and they are doing very well. The issue with it being cold, I have plenty of experience with that living in Alberta and I was...

How should I bury hardware cloth? (Picture included of spot)

I lined the entire bottom of my run with regular poultry wire and so far is holding up well. It goes to the foundation blocks all the way around. Never had any predators get in as of yet. I have a couple inches if gravel then a few inches of sand on top of it. Occasionally, the girls will dig...

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

I live in Alberta so it's pretty cold during the winter and I have sand in my run and shavings in my coop. When it's below -25 C the girls usually stay inside, but, they enjoy digging holes in the frozen sand in the run and they don't seem to mind it much, they just aren't wild about snow. I...
