They both have Vulture Hocks. A *HUGE* DQ for Marans. Acceptable for European bred Cochin. But I think it is a DQ in the US. but doesn't a Cochin have yellow skin? Marans can only have white skin. I'm at a loss.
They're called "Fauve Acajou á Queue Noire" in french. They were accepted into the French Standard of Perfection in the early 1950's. There is a Facebook page if you're interested-"Black Tailed Red and Columbian Marans".
We're working to get the hens to color up better. He looks nice, but the cockbirds have always looked good. Trying to get the hens a more uniform color. More like a New Hampshire. Eggs look GREAT!
You're absolutely right about males coloring just as well with Co-vs-Db! It is the hens that were not. I have since started adding Co, and it's making a world of difference.

I was using a genotype from two authors. They said the Black Tailed Red was: eWh/eWh, Db/Db, Di/Di, Mh/Mh. After more than 7 years trying that the hens were *STILL* Not coloring up well. I have seen how Columbian will, so I'm adding that fourth gene. The first generation looks real promising.
