Been happily and successfully raising Cornish Cross every summer. Thinking about taking the plunge to egglayers given the upcoming changes after the latest election. Time to check out coops again
My flock of Cornish Cross was too healthy! They matured a week too early and I don't think they'll make it another week to their scheduled butcher date. (My Amish butcher has no phone and I have to make reservations by mail...remember those days?) I'm looking for a different butcher I could...
Update.....The Corid made no significant impact. It finally occurred to me to call the hatchery where I purchased the birds, which is Chickens for Backyards. They were extremely helpful. They considered possibility that it may be a respiratory infection because of the difficult Spring we have...
Organic crumbles. Started treatment too late. Lost one this morning.
I did some research on Corid last night and one of the things that came up was cider vinegar as being helpful as a preventive. I gave my chickens very little this time around and used a different kind of bedding in the...
I thought about that, but there is no blood in the poop. There was almost no poop yesterday and what there was looked pretty normal...Just checked on chicken again ...seems to be more alert and more poop. I don't normally give them any grit and just rely on what they might get from the ground...
Don't know what is wrong with my CornishX. At 4 weeks the first one died after about four days of increasing listlessness. A week later a 2nd one is behaving the same way. Color of comb and area surrounding eyes seems slightly lighter, but not always. They get increased "rounder", rarely...
I didn't see this until the first of April. Sorry about that, but I now have a Sunbeam heating pad (24 x12)attached to the underside of a wire form and it easily is accommodating 16 chicks in down to 30 degree temps. I wouldn't hesitate to put 20 chicks underneath. One morning I found half of...
I took my week old chicks outside yesterday to take a couple photos for Easter greetings and was surprised at how much they loved being outside. I'm so glad to read your post. I raise CornishX in a tractor and have never had any health problems, and have noticed that they do like to forage...
I have now tried all 3 methods and here are my results.
Heat lamp. I had difficulty getting the right height to get the correct temp and as the outside temp varied it was challenging to keep compensating with the lamp. I live in the North and temps in April and May can vary widely. I also...
I haven't built mine yet. Still trying to think everything through. Ted Brown had an excellent description of his build of a Woods coop with lots of pictures. It is an open-air style with the plans taken from a book by Prince T Woods, published in the 1920's. There doesn't seem to be much...
Wondering if anyone with a Woods coop is using the deep litter method? Didn't know if there would be any moisture issues with that method. Some, not all, videos mention moisture issues as they go to finally clean out the coop. Didn't know if this is a management issue or a method issue.
