Hard, impacted crop just turned soft and squishy this morning - good thing???

My maran Ling's crop started out big and squishy. We started puking her (stinky!) and feeding her yogurt and keeping her inside. Then, it turned small and hard like a golf ball, so we figured it must have become impacted, and we started giving her oil and massaging it. This lasted about two...

Just got a new rooster with a flaccid comb

I never did post back about this, I just realized. Colin is doing very well. He's a huge brat, but he protects the hens very well. He is the father of six chicks now as well. Four boys and two girls.

8 week old chicks - boys or girls!? Only one is obvious so far.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! They'll be pretty on my plate, with some garnish.

8 week old chicks - boys or girls!? Only one is obvious so far.

The father to all of these is a mix of ameraucana and wyandotte (Colin, if anyone remembers him :) He's a lil brat, but he's doing quite well). There are three pure-bred mothers of different breeds. The two black ones, Gusta and Big Black, have a black copper maran mother. Big Black is...

What in the holy heck is my rooster doing?!?!

So the other funny thing he's doing is explained as well. He'll pick up a twig or some dead grass and start going nuts over it until the girls pay attention. Must be locating good nesting materials for them :)

What in the holy heck is my rooster doing?!?!

Well, my Wyandotte Birdo has caught on and she's loving the spot. Sigh. Any way to redirect them?

What in the holy heck is my rooster doing?!?!

He's driving the hens insane and we can't figure out what he is doing. He keeps going into a corner on my porch on some newspapers and making himself as small as possible and and scratching a bit and making a constant "RRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH, RRRRRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH" sound. The...

    Hen yawning, mouth-breathing, and wheezing

My favorite hen and namesake, Birdo, started yawning frequently a couple weeks ago. Now it has progressed to constant mouth-breathing and wheezing, especially when she's stressed or after flapping her wings a lot. Her energy level is fine and she's eating and drinking fine. What is going on...

    This IS a coyote, right?

Hmm...I wonder which book you're thinking of. Prodigal Summer focuses around three different groups of people, one of whom is named Deanna Wolfe :) She's a forest ranger who tracks a den of coyotes in southern Appalachia. She suspected that they were moving further east to fill the gap left...

    Female?

From the responses so far I think it's safe to say...hermaphrodite.

    This IS a coyote, right?

Hey NC folk - There's a novel by Barbara Kingsolver called Prodigal Summer, about southern Appalachia farms and wilderness, and is somewhat centered around coyotes moving east into this habitat. Pretty neat. I just love this part of the country. Really good climate for raising the birdies.
