We’ve got a lot of these in our garden

I live in a swamp next to the jungle in North Sumatra, Indonesia. This is their natural habitat. It’s also the natural habitat for wild junglefowl from which all chickens are descended, so chickens and monitors are used to coexisting.

We’ve got a lot of these in our garden

They’re what we call village chickens here, a good mix of gamefowl and junglefowl. They are very feisty.

As I typed my last reply I noticed a huge black eagle flying low overhead. I’m far more worried about those, but the chickens are good at spotting them and quickly get under cover.

No chance of that - my birds are free-range from day one and wander over about 2.5 acres. I haven’t lost one yet to a monitor.

This one is just under 3’ long. We have a 5’ and a 7’ that regularly visit too.

Please tell me I have a pretty pullet!

My birds are slow maturing gamefowl/junglefowl crosses in the crucible of chicken genetics here in Sumatra.

Please tell me I have a pretty pullet!

It really isn’t. This is a pea comb on a male at 5 weeks:

    Raising Chicks

Pick a breed you like the look of. They all lay eggs and pretty soon you’ll have more than enough. I started out with point-of-lay pullets - 20-week-old female chickens. If you can find a local seller I suggest that’s a good way to start. Four pullets is probably enough to start with. Consider...

    What is your favorite breed?

They like to sneak into the house. Here are some more pics of my chickens:

    What is your favorite breed?

Gamefowl/junglefowl crosses. So much personality, so much pugnacious feistiness.
