    My Cornish seem small

I'm going to weigh in the morning. Live weight. I'll weigh the largest rooster and the smallest hen (Not the runt.I have one of those)

    My Cornish seem small

I did take that as an outlier. But mine were definitely underperforming

    My Cornish seem small

thanks for the responses I have a 13 birds and I'm guessing a 2 gallon feeder. They have gotten one of those almost full in the morning and one scoop at night. Until today I fed the Dumoor's Starter/Grower 20% protein. Quote: Ten pound chickens at 13 weeks??? I highly doubt it. Quote: I...

    My Cornish seem small

I have some Cornish X Rocks that I got from McMurray Hatchery the first week of September which makes them almost 10 weeks old. All the information and testimonials indicated that, at 10-12 weeks, I would have some real nice birds to butcher. One testimonial/review claims he is dressing out...

    Growing fodder for chickens

They were laying but tapered off due to molt ands shorter days. I didn't keep good track but I think they cooled off before fodder. You didn't discourage me at all. I did have a goal of reducing feed costs which I did. We'll be adding goats and pigs in the future and will be trying the...

    Growing fodder for chickens

lazy gardener, my chickens do free range. We do get winters and snow. (I'm in western Pa north of Pittsburgh.) When I first started learning about fodder, I perceived it as a way to cut down my feed costs using it instead of feed. It did because I almost stopped giving them bought feed. It...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Thanks, CATRYNA. I get wheat for under $10/bushel from the local feed store. Of course, it's not organic and, hopefully mot GMO. At $40 delivered, it gets harder for me to justify foddering. I buy Dumoors feed for $15. I don't have a lot of room but may look at growing some barley next year.

    Growing fodder for chickens

Well, my feed store doesn't have barley. I'm going to have to hunt around I forgot to ask about rye Made a couple more calls and struck out on barley. Must not be grown around me. Looked online and it becomes cost prohibitive. Looks like I'll either stick with wheat and they'll learn to...

Thanks Papas Chickens. I'll call over to the feed store and see if they have it.

    Growing fodder for chickens

Thanks for your input, CATRYNA. I'll check to see if the feed store has barley and give it a try. You seem to verify my idea of shorter grass. Would rye be any different if barley isn't available?

    Growing fodder for chickens

I'm around 2 months into this experiment with mixed results I am using untreated wheat from a local feed store. Not really any problems with growing fodder. Usually 7 days to grass 3"-4" tall. I have been trying to feed it to chickens, ducks and rabbits. The chickens will pick at it. The...

    Only Roosters dying (died)

I was at a total loss for an explanation. When they were sick, they laid on their side. Sometimes they acted like one side was sort of paralyzed. As I said, I always fed all my birds the same feed. Not sure how I would feed the hens one thing and the boys something else. I don't know what...

    Only Roosters dying (died)

I was feeding them layer. I have always fed hens and roosters the same feed. My chickens free range and are closed in only at night so they don't eat as much feed
