Incubator cooled off slightly on day 2

Got a little late start on getting them in the incubator, the first incubator we were loaned, wouldn't reach 99 degrees, so a friend made me a new one ... however on the first day in, We were gone for a little while and a storm knocked our power out for a couple of hours when we got home the...

Help! There is a skunk in my coop now!

I was surprised by a skunk one night when locking up the coop, he was under their roost, I thought it was one of the hens and almost grabbed it, imagine my shock when I saw it was what I THOUGHT was a skunk. (sure enough it was!!) I ran in and got my husband he went in and got the rifle, we...

    Duck ID and gender?

I did look at Mottled... I thought maybe that one, she bought it at Tractor Supply last spring as a 3 day hatchling along with a couple dozen other ducks, it's the only one that survived a hungry fox so she's not sure which one it was. She normally buys runners so this must have been the only...

    Duck ID and gender?

I know it's not a mallard drake. it never has had the drake markings and it's body shape isn't the same as the Mallard, no distinct markings at all really. except maybe the eye marking...

    Duck ID and gender?

That was what my niece thought, but there are no blue feathers in the wing... typically mallard hens also have blue and white in their wing but the drakes is more distinctive and it is larger than a mallard. So I think I've ruled that out, unless I get more votes for 'mallard hen' than anything...

    Duck ID and gender?

    pekings on the Lake

Seriously!? I never thought about that! I'll have to see what happens when we pen them up for the worst of the winter!

    pekings on the Lake

I can't wait to see what we come up with in the spring, if they will hatch any eggs. If we have problems, I have a friend that has broody hens and an incubator.. we'll use whatever is necessary to hatch what we can! She has all sorts of mixed breed ducks! They are quite interesting!

    pekings on the Lake

that's one thing I'm worried about in the spring. The geese terrorized them at first in the spring, but as they grew and got used to the lake they became the 'residents' and the geese were just passerby's... and they were curious by later in the summer. It was fun watching them accept each...

    pekings on the Lake

More of my 'guys'. They have been so much fun this year! They follow us around when we're in the boat and come yo us when we call them. We can't catch them any more but they will come right up to us. They've had the 25 acre lake to themselves and have been welcomed whenever the geese come in...

    pekings on the Lake

Lol! They outsmart us every time! Once the lake freezes enough they can't feed from it, it should be easier. The pen is the only place, out of water, that their feed is located. Just being patient....
