Molting - one at a time, a group activity?

My lavenders were super fluffy, round and gorgeous when fully feathered but good heavens, fall/winter molt was never kind to them  I had an EE when I was in high school. Her name was Maria. She had silver feathers with an iridescent lace. She never molted badly. I do love EEs for...

Molting - one at a time, a group activity?

My lavender and buff orpingtons all molted at different times. They all eventually got around to it and would be in different stages of disaster. My lavenders all seemed to lose a lot more feathers at one time than my buffs. I remember them getting to a point of just having some sparse neck and...

    PVC Feeders for Turkeys

Thanks! That's exactly what I would like to do. I've had PVC feeders for my chickens and I put a cap on the tops just like that. I hadn't thought of a plug for the bottom though. That's a great idea! I could cap feed off when we close everyone up for the night :D

    Minimizing Rooster Noise

So I spoke with my husband again last night about keeping a rooster. He has agreed to see how it goes. I didn't think about how ventilation would negate the insulation. I, too, think being so far from the coop will help a lot. There are other roosters in the neighborhood but I can only barely...

    PVC Feeders for Turkeys

Has anyone tried using a PVC feeder for turkeys? I've decided to make a separate space from my chickens for my turkeys. I'm thinking of a three-walled shed with a covered run. Since it'll be open with a dirt floor I'd like to try to minimize the rodent buffet. I was thinking of a PVC feeder...

    Minimizing Rooster Noise

I do have to keep them contained in some way. Our property backs up to open range so we have A LOT of critters that would love a chicken or turkey dinner. We frequently have coyotes, skunk, raccoons, hawks and owls. With as much space as the coop that we're planning will allow I don't think...

    Minimizing Rooster Noise

Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to keep him in the coop at all times. If that were the case I wouldn't keep a roo at all. I would open the coop later morning (9ish). Crowing doesn't bother us, it's being woken up at the crack of dawn that we're not so keen on.

    Minimizing Rooster Noise

I'm in the process of planning our new chicken coop/shed. I can go as high as 200sqft before I need a permit. I'll be keeping approximately 20 chickens and a couple of turkeys together in this coop. I would like to get Australorps as a dual purpose breed for eggs and meat. I would like to have a...

Introducing my 5 new Lavender Orpingtons!

Here's a picture of the 2 that are going to be 9wks old in a couple of days (along with one of my buffs wondering what all the flashing lights were): I took this when they were 6 1/2wks old. I need to take a new picture of them. They are absolutely beautiful! Love my lavenders :)
