The little white one has blue feet, maybe she's a white Easter Egger :) I had a few of those and they are beautiful.
If you decide to keep Big Bertha, control her feed intake or she'll get obese! ;) lots of greens and kitchen scraps, very little chicken feed for her. I successfully kept 6...
Why no citrus? Is it bad for them? I use old oranges from our trees and they appear to like it. The only problem I've noticed so far is that the pupae will die if I accidentally set the slice down on top of them (oops).
I got my production hybrid reds from Vega Farms in Davis, CA. They're great! :)
Good option for those in CA, unfortunately they don't do mail order at all so you have to have them delivered or go pick em up.
But it's worth it for MG clean birds!!
Quick update since my birds are now grown:
Did not de-wing. Have had only ONE escapee in 8 months! :D didn't even clip feathers after all, as I couldn't get any help.
The large yard appears to be enough space so they don't want to fly out. (round pen, ~400 ft ofelectic poultry net). I got a...
Hoping to get back into quail egg production :)
I have an old raccoon cage that's wire on all sides, 6x6x4. Considering turning it on its side and putting some sawhorses or something under it to raise it off the ground.
Would that work? Is 4ft enough for the quail to boink without killing...
I don't name my production birds but the bantams are called Trouble. Yes both of them. I started out naming them Tribble and Trouble, but Tribble just didn't stick. They're both defiant little crazies so it works
Also had Pumpkin and Shadow, EE's named for their feather colors.
Sorry for necro-threading :P But I thought this might help someone: http://www.poultryimprovement.org/statesContent.cfm . You can click on the state, it opens a document, then you can scroll through to see which hatcheries and breeders test clean for MG/MS.
Haha yes, I started out with Buff Orps just for fun, and got a handful of BBS Orps last year, they are incredibly lazy and it's awesome XD If they were a little more efficient in laying, I'd go for an Orps only laying flock!
Hey I'm interested in the Golden Layer Hybrids, but they aren't listed on the website. Do I need to call to order those? Or are they not available... How was your experience with those hybrids?
(sorry, I do realize this is a moderately old thread)
Okay. Maybe I just didn't clip wings early enough with my last flock....
Like I said, I absolutely hate the idea of mutilating any animal into something more "convenient" for the keeper.
(Though we do disbud our goats, but that seems to be a different issue to an actual amputation like de winging.)

Speaking of breeds, maybe I should just aim for heavier breeds that will only need to be clipped once, before they get too fat to fly... Does anyone have any experience with Production Reds? Are they super light and flighty like the New Hampshires and Mediterranean breeds?
