    Picking Rooster Breed

I’m not on Facebook, and I have already looked through craigslist and our local sales website. I will keep on the lookout. It seems like they are sold out of a lot online as well. Even TSC was all sold out till they restock later this week. 😞

    Picking Rooster Breed

Requesting opinions on a rooster breed. I have a mixed flock, and my rooster died this past winter. I’m trying to decide what breed to replace him with. I like brahmas, barred rocks, and speckled Sussex the best out of my flock for all-around gentleness, size, foraging, and good layers. I’ve...

    Keeping track of specific hens

I actually had to look this up. I’ve never heard of this before. I guess it’s similar to ear tagging bigger livestock.

    Keeping track of specific hens

. That is actually what I was concerned about at first. I had thought about getting the open kind because I’m always wary of putting things on legs in case something gets caught or too tight. But then I wondered if they would easily get pulled off. Or possibly picked at by the other hens. I...

    Keeping track of specific hens

😄 I always thought that I could but then I had to do a triple take this morning of my two similar looking ones and I thought I better not take my chances with a dozen or so identical ones walking around LOL

    Keeping track of specific hens

For several years I have kept about 9 to 12 hens at any given time. I love having a mixed flock for a lot of different reasons, easy identification being one. But I had a rooster accidentally sip into an order of hens and am going to let him give us some new chicks this year. It made me start...

    Foot swollen?

The same thing happened to one of my daughters twice actually… One time was worse than the other. But she was an infant and I was thankful to have caught it when I did. I felt terrible!

    Foot swollen?

Here is the other foot compared to the swollen, and I will definitely try the Epsom salts!

    Foot swollen?

It was wet for a while there with a lot of spring rains but hasn’t been for a while. I will try the Epsom salts. I didn’t realize you could use that if there was not a scab showing.

    Foot swollen?

We feed organic feed (non soy) name is escaping me at moment but they also free range and get scraps. Thank you for advice! I didn’t know that about the redness.

    Foot swollen?

My ten month old Wyandotte hen was limping two weeks ago, and I have been watching it ever since thinking it might be bumblefoot. There was never a black spot or open area but there was swelling in her back toe. She doesn’t really limp at all now, but the toe remains swollen. Can anyone tell...

    Children and ducks

Lol thanks to you all! Love those pictures :-) I did not even think about them not being sexed. I went home to think about it for a few days, and I just assumed when I went back the person would be able to tell me which was which :-) I bought my chicks from a hatchery, but for my area I usually...
