not an expert but have had a couple of hens lay thier first two or three eggs with soft shells, they started laying hard eggs after a couple of days.
as for eating them, i did and i am still here.
now home schooling is something i know a little about.

many thanks for all your replies. i think i have identified the problem.
yesterday i put a nice heavy duty 1 inch mesh net over the pen and then went and hid in the top of the barn (well armed just in case) about an hour later a large goshawk landed in a tree next to the chicken pen.
so...
thanks for all the replies. if its a buzzard then i guess keeping them in the run and whacking a roof on it is the only solution.
as for rustlers then do you think a .223 will solve the problem or would a shotgun be a better bet? (for those without a sense of humour this last bit is a joke)
