Welcome to BYC!
You will learn so much here.
This happened when we first started keeping ducks. Coop door left open overnight and something killed five of our ducks.
It is devastating and a learning experience you NEVER forget.
But, don’t beat yourself up over it.
Purchase more chicks...
I have a Rhode Island Red that does this. She isn’t broody and she is laying eggs.
The RIR hens seem to be my roosters’ favorites. Redheads! 😂
So she’s probably trying to get a break.
The males make a raspy sound.
Much easier to hear the difference at about eight weeks.
I usually take them one at a time far enough away so I don’t hear the other ducklings.
@Tookie
She doesn’t stay off long.
Yesterday, my daughter tried to count the eggs and check any unmarked while she was off the nest. She checked them,
but Peggy sat back on her eggs and hissed at my daughter. This duck is normally so chill and sweet.
She’s very protective of her eggs.
My...
None! Peggy is broody.
She has been sitting on her nest and it is HUGE. 😂
My daughter marked seven eggs for her.
We do not need any more ducks, but she is our smallest and sweetest Blue Swedish duck. I’m not sure if she will even stick it out. Just letting her be. ❤️
I am happy this day is about over. This morning, I had to cull one of my oldest hens.
No matter how many times I have to deal with animal death it doesn’t ever seem easier. But, this is part of raising animals. And raising animals makes me happy.
