Good to know, I think two out of three laying now. I found a soft shell under the roost yesterday morning, I believe that’s the second hens first egg. The first one that started laying seems to be testing all the spots around the garden to lay, this morning I found her in a bucket with water in...
I believe that, he’s an instigator that one. But soo gorgeous and sweet. I really hope it doesn’t come to culling him or rehoming.
My hens are laying under the patio away from him now, but unfortunately it’s away from my reach also. The roll away nest boxes for the silkies aren’t quite complete...
Thank you! I didn’t take a photo of the shell to show my kids, but your photo worked perfectly!
The roll away box will hopefully help me with my egg mysteries, the last several weeks I’ve not been getting many eggs and I blamed it on the light this time of year and moulting. Turns out they’ve...
I finally found a blue egg!!!
While walking through the coop this morning I stepped on a bluish coloured egg hidden in the shavings. And I also walked in on all 14 of my hens having a feast of the other eggs that were waiting for me, they even managed to crack one of the ceramic eggs I use to...
My azure blue hens and broilers both have this colour ear lobes. The blue azure will lay blue eggs and the broiler lays brown eggs (I know, I know).
My silkies have blue earlobes but it’s a much diffferent shade of blue than what your hen has. Yours is definitely not silkie like.
Oh thank goodness! I have a bunch of silkies and a silkie rooster and I was really hoping to avoid another rooster of a different breed.
The large comb may be a problem for me here on the east coast of Canada. We experience lots of freezes and thaws throughout the winter and frost bite is a real...
Here are some photos.
Here is the big comb and the little one.
Small comb
Big comb
The size difference doesn’t look nearly as bad in photos. Im probably just nitpicking.
Sorry to hear that you’re feeling down.. This whole year has been kind of a bust. I enjoyed this little bit of humor too, know that you are not alone. :)
My friend, who is from Alberta, got chickens for the first time this past spring and she fed them Cheetos regularly as snacks. One day when they started laying she came over to show me these gorgeous dark yolks but she was in a panic because she thought it was the Cheetos!! Lol She was convinced...
Soooo funny, I just got in the house after cleaning my greenhouse coop and just observed my rooster pecking at one of the little ones that are from the batch yours came from! He pecked her a few times and walked away a little, then tried each of the others. He didn’t have any luck but the...
Because they are mixed breed I hope that maybe it’s just the different traits of the two breeds. One might have larger wattles and comb?
I’ll try to get a picture today, they are pretty hens but impossible to get near!
As for laying, they just turned 19 weeks. So any day now I hope! They are...
Turns out one of my azures is a rooster. The wattles are huge and his comb is three times the size of the other two ladies.
If bred together what do you think the outcome would be? Do they breed true or am I misunderstanding what that term means?
Was he acting like he’s picking up food for them and bowing down with it? My rooster does this to his girls. He even pretends he’s pecking food to get them over near him so he can snag a lady 😂
