    Faverolles, pullets?

I think all three are pullets, but are you sure they're pure faverolle? Faverolles are usually much lighter in colour, and these girls seem closer to salmon than the other colours

Chicken keeping without coops or with mutiple coops

We have a coop, but almost all of our chickens roost in a large old plum tree in their run, unless the weather is really bad. Then they retreat to the coop for more shelter Living in New Zealand means we don't have to worry about extreme weather or predators as much as other countries. We've...

    Broken spur

Here's some more photos, including his other non broken spur (which I trimmed after taking the photo) and the disgruntled rooster himself

This did happen 24-28 hours ago, but I couldn't catch him until now

    Broken spur

Our leghorn rooster has broken one of his spurs , and I don't know what I should do, if anything. His behavior is normal

    Wasn't expecting this

I know, I just use warmer weather as an indicator of spring, which means longer days. We're currently at 9 hours of daylight

    Wasn't expecting this

It's the middle of winter here in New Zealand, so egg production has slowed to a halt for our girls. We check the nests maybe once a month until the weather warms up, because our hens are very old girls who manage 2 eggs a week, if that, during summer. But this winter we have 7 hens that...

    Rabbit underweight?

He could just be small. If you're really concerned, take him to the vet

My broody hens this go around

The hen with 30 has her hands full (wings?) :gig We had a hen raise 14 chicks, and when they started to get big they didn't all fit under her. Poor mama hen was still trying to snuggle all these quickly growing chicks under her when they were 8 weeks old

    What defines a good rooster?

We've got a leghorn rooster from some neighbours who's in with our girls atm, he's very flighty and a bit of a wimp. Our top hen gave him some scars when we first put him in the run, so he gives her and the other top hens a wide berth But he hasn't attacked us so we're keeping him for now

    Broody hen.

Broody hens don't need that much space. They need a well sheltered nest box, with enough space to get off the nest every few days to eat and go toilet. Once the chicks hatch you can move your hen and chicks to a larger area if needed We use an old hutch as a temporary home for our broody hens...

    Broody hen.

Depends on the hen if you can move her or not. Some hens will remain broody if you shift them, some won't. The sooner you move her once she starts sitting the better. Since you currently already have a hen and chicks where you are planning to shift her, I would wait until that space is free to...

Topic of the Week - What do/can you do with unwanted roosters?

We live in rural nz and we give ours to whichever neighbour wants them. Doesn't matter if it's for eating or to add to their own flock The neighbour who took our last 4 extra roosters culled 3 for the freezer and kept the one with the best temper to join their own flock
