I’m writing this story because after I told it to my daughter, she couldn’t stop laughing out loud and told me I needed to share this story with all my chicken enthusiast friends. So here it is!
We bought Matilda the Marans three days ago as a companion to our teenager rooster Mario. Mario’s...
PS. Here's a basic list of things to feed chickens and to raise in your garden to feed chickens:
Poultry:
Cooked summer and winter squash
Cooked or raw root vegetables
Milk from our cow and whey from cheesemaking
Bugs and worms if birds are allowed to free range
Painted Mountain corn...
Sorry but I disagree with part of that 9 point list and I'd like to elaborate on a couple of the points. Old timer chicken raisers like my Mom who as far as I can remember kept chickens and never had a sick one always feed the potato peelings to the chickens. Now I'll grant you our potatoes...
I think yours is the best advise of all. Roos will be roos, and by doing the "Walk of Shame" your letting him know your in charge but not his enemy. So far all my young flock are friendly but as they grow and come into their breeding age I will keep your advise in mind. Really like that "Walk of...

My Black Copper Marans are 7 wks old now and from your pic I would say you have a hen. If the comb gets bigger and pinker or if you start seeing the waddles over the next 3 wiks it's a roo but right now looks like a hen. Fingers crossed!
Thanks for the insight. That makes me feel better. I just would be sick hearted if I did or didn't do something correctly and they got hurt or die. I wish they had a mama hen to look after them as she would be better at it then me. I can't wait until next year when these babies are old enough to...
Okay, thanks. After the thunderstorm I went and checked on them as I was afraid they got to chilled. They seemed to be good and dry and much more tame and trusting of me. They each even let me pet them. The little hen that I spoke of as the smartest one even jumped up on the roost to get close...
I was wondering if some experienced chicken people could advise as to weather or not the behavior of my 7 1/2 wk old Black Jersey Giants behavior is normal or not. Today after weeding the garden I took a bucket of the weeds as a treat out to my chicks. It started pouring down rain before I could...
