    Baby chick fleas?!

    I had 2 chicks hatch out today (more on the way) and I was looking them over and one has all these flea looking bugs on it!!! What do I do?!

    My necropsy was done at the state lab... Haha I hope they are knowledgable too! I only had one bird die but everyone else was pretty non symptomatic. A sneeze or two but that's it

    Thank you JediJinx! It's so tough to decide what to do. I would like to raise a few more chicks but I have no intention of selling any of my birds, including chicks. I feel like this disease is everywhere!

    A few members of my flock have showed the same symptoms and one hen actually went into full on respiratory distress and died! I had her necropsied and the results came back as mycoplasma. I treated with tylan and oxytetracycline and had good results. Do yourself a favor and have one tested...

    It's just hard to believe that this disease is so prevalent yet there isn't a true vaccine for it? I've always heard the vaccine available just lessens the symptoms? And doesn't actually protect new birds? I could be wrong?

    Thank you for your stories, familypendragon I can't imagine what you're going through!!! This is so terrible!!! I'm scared to cull my birds just to end up with this again. What if your neighbors get infected birds?!

    I had some in my flock and I treated them with tylan and oxytetracycline, testing revealed mycoplasma.

    Sorry I don't know why I put Tylan in that post! I initially treated with tylan but once diagnosed I started oxytetracycline which is in the same family as tetracycline. Sorry for the confusion!

    The active drug in tylan is oxytetracycline, so same family of antibiotics :0) it's a good broad spectrum

    Kathy, Thanks for the websites. I will look at those. I've looked at sending samples to some labs but it's about $50+ a pop.

    sgraff, I know it's tough! I'm still on the fence about what to do, the more veterinarians I talk to I actually become a little more optimistic. They tell me that this is so common and it's so common that people have them and will never know and that the odds are definitely in my favor that...
