    Lumpy eggs

Just thought I would update the thread. The lumpy egg layer is now laying normal eggs again. I was a little over a week with the lumps, but they are now back to normal.

    Lumpy eggs

Thanks for the replies, the hen is about a year old. She laid another lumpy egg today. Since we get way more eggs than we eat we have been throwing the lumpy eggs out. When you say comes and goes, any idea on how long this should last?

    Lumpy eggs

One of my leghorns just started laying lumpy eggs about a week ago. The egg is white, poor lighting. I was wondering if she was getting too much calcium, I do give them free will oyster shells and was wondering if this could be the problem. I do let them free range during the day. I have...

oh, which is it round limb or 2 by 4 for roost?!!!!!!

We also have a week or two were it get down to a minus 35F. I put the heat lamps in the coop as every one I talked to around here said you need to heat your coop. Even another guy at work that is a part time farmer (100 head of cattle or so) he also has about twenty chickens and he said he heats...

Poulty Pros: How long to amortize infrastructure costs?

It is a hobby for the wife and I. I figure once eggs get to 75 dollars a dozen, We should brake even in about six or seven years. :) edit: that was before I decided to take a job transfer and will have to start all over.

oh, which is it round limb or 2 by 4 for roost?!!!!!!

I have two roost in my coop. One is about four feet off the ground, the other about three feet. Both are 2X4s wide end lying flat. I have poop boards under each roost. the height I have it at makes it easy to clean the poop off the boards. They are both high enough to clean without bending over...

    Time to lay an egg?

Yep, having this discussion with a fellow chicken owner at work. He is already heating his coop and the coldest it has been sot far is 8* F. I asked him what he plans to do when the real cold hits, minus 30* F for at least a couple of weeks in late January early February. He also uses the...

    Time to lay an egg?

@aart just read the thread on heating your nest boxes. It did not seam they wanted to roost in there as the heat was turned off at night. However the op does not have as extreme temperatures as I have here in northern MN. This would help during the transition season until it get really cold...

    Time to lay an egg?

I am going to check out the thread about heating your nest. My concern is they my want to roost in there when it gets cool, say minus twenty to thirty below zero.

    Time to lay an egg?

Good analogy with women having babies. Some of the girls definitely stay in the nesting boxes longer than others. On weekends I check the nest at about six am, I usually get up at five if I have to go to work or not. then nine and again at about eleven. They are usually done by eleven. I have...

    Time to lay an egg?

No not how old the girls have to be, all seven of my hens are laying. Just wondering how long after they go into the nesting box how long it will be before they lay their egg. I have checked on the girls with one or two of them in the box, I go back out a half an hour later and they are...

How do you track how old your eggs are?

One co-worker says he writes the date on his eggs with a sharpie. I was wondering if any one used other ideas on how to know how old your eggs are. We currently have seven hens, six are laying and we almost always get six eggs a day, sometimes only five, but mostly six. It is just the wife and...

    Do Oyster shells go bad?

These are the wife's chickens, but I have to admit I do enjoy watching them. I also enjoy the building process, it is just finding the time to get everything done. I did find out owning chickens is not a cost effective way to get eggs. Start up cost are a killer; I figure if eggs ever get up...
