    Little Richard's Palace of Love

We recently bought a house, and after several years, and lots of chickens, I had to make some big decisions about our flock. Ultimately, since we were going to have far less land, I decided to was time to downgrade our flock from 25 to 6 chickens. Our neighbors bought the majority of the flock...

Rooster's comb and waddles quickly turning black

Thanks! This is really helpful information! I just cleaned the coop this morning, but I'll try to get poop photos later (there's something I never thought I'd say :D ) One of the roosters has a very messy bottom. But with all this rain and mud, it can be difficult to discern mud from poo. They...

Rooster's comb and waddles quickly turning black

No fighting, they get along fine. We definitely have bugs, especially after so much rain. I see you live in the NC mountains like myself, so I know you know what I mean! Seems like if it were bugs though, wouldn't all the chickens have at least some of the same? There's not a trace on the rest...

Rooster's comb and waddles quickly turning black

I have two roosters whose combs and waddles have started turning dramatically black, just over the last few days. It's definitely not frostbite, as it's very warm here. It has been very wet though, although their coop is dry, and they free range during the day. Both are about 1 1/2 years old...

Finally snapped a picture of my 2 new chicks. We've named them Simon and Garfunkel.

    March 2017! Hatch with us!

A heating pad...why didn't I ever think of that? That's a great idea! I think my hatch is probably finished. I candled the remainders. It looks like at least 2 quit early (pourous eggs...I should know better!), and the others are so dark, I was never even sure they were developing. Those OE...

    March 2017! Hatch with us!

Yes, if you breed a true Ameracauna over your EEs, that will assure the blue gene. I'm actually thinking of switching over to an Ameracauna roo myself. I keep a Cuckoo Marans roo with a mixed flock of Marans, Ameraucanas, EEs, and OEs. I hope your hatch turns out ok! Power issues are so...

    March 2017! Hatch with us!

I use a Brinesa EcoGlow brooder. It's sits to one side at the bottom. I love it! They're not exactly cheap, but I've had a couple of scares with heat lamps. The other nice thing about the EcoGlow is that the chicks tuck themselves under it like a broody hen, and come out to explore. I find it...
