Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'How To Prevent Dirty Eggs in the Chicken Coop'

I used to have to clean out my nesting boxes frequently. Then I read an article (I think it was here on BYC) that said you should never let your chickens sleep in the nesting boxes. Since that time, about 3-4 weeks ago, I've been closing off access to the boxes. Now I rarely have to clean...

Is there sales tax on chicken feed in California?

I actually looked it up in the California Department of Taxes and Fees Administration and found out chickens are classified as food animals, i.e. food for human consumption. As such, they are not subject to tax and neither is the feed for them. I took my info down to my Walmart. They said they...

Is there sales tax on chicken feed in California?

My local Walmart charges tax if you order it online, but not if you buy it in the store. (I get Kruse's Super Fowl and Flock because it's 20% protein vs normal 16%). I'm going to visit the Walmart to ask why they charge tax for online orders.

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'Cleaning and storing fresh eggs'

I gather the eggs and put them in the kitchen. After that, it's up to my wife to treat them the way she deems best. But I can tell you that she very rarely, if ever, washes them. She does just like the article says, wipes them with a dry cloth and them sets them in egg cartons on the kitchen...

Broody or Bust: Can You Handle a Sitting Hen?

I just released a broody Easter Egger today after 4 days of incarceration. It seems to have worked. I haven't seen her on the nest at all today. Keeping my fingers crossed because the only jail I have is filled again! :D BTW, I got 9 correct (but I had to make my best guess on a couple of them).

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'How To Tame Chickens from the Start'

I really wish I'd read this before I got my chicks! Of the ones on the list, I have Barred Rocks, Black Australorps, and Easter Eggers. My newest "chicks" are several months old now. Still, some of them are friendly even without that much interaction. That's a testament to how much more...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Since I took her out of the nest, egg production has increased slightly. This makes me think that instead of leaving to go eat, she may have been eating some eggs while sitting on the nest for so long. Possible? The nest she was sitting on was the one that usually has the most eggs.

How to Break a Broody Hen

I came here for this specific subject. I have a hen that's probably two years old, but hasn't been broody until a few weeks ago. Every time I go to collect eggs, she's in the same nesting box by herself. All of her flockmates (except for the ones who are really laying eggs) are out eating &...

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'Identifying & Treating Chicken Heat Stress'

Last year here in northern California, it got into the 110's for a few periods I (it's supposed to be 103 today). So I constructed a misting system out of some PVC and some fittings I bought online. I hung it from tree branches in the yard for my flock to cool off. Under the same tree, I also...

How do you treat pasty butt in chicks?!?!

The hatchery I order chicks from suggests 1/4 cup (2 oz.) of raw ACV to every quart (32 oz.) of water.

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'Top 10 Best Egg Producing Chicken Breeds'

I'd like to get some California Whites, but every time I look, they're sold out with no info on when they will be available. Where and when did you get yours?

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'Top 10 Best Egg Producing Chicken Breeds'

We have White Leghorns and Easter Eggers, but we also get excellent production out of our Golden Comets and Cinnamon Queens (est. 250-320 large brown eggs/year). And they lay throughout the year, although like almost all other chickens they do slow down in winter. The Easter Eggers quit almost...

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'Fermenting Chicken Feed: A Straightforward Method'

I'm new at this, especially to FF (never done it before). How long does it last? Do you have to make a fresh batch every day or can I make a lot of it ahead of time? It sounds like just what my flock needs. Thank you for the info.

Comment by 'Bruthabuz' in article 'The Deep Litter Method: All You Need To Know'

I think I've been using this method without knowing it was a method! Mine is not 8-12 inches deep, but when the bedding gets soiled enough, I turn it over to mix it in with the clean bedding. Then, when it is all soiled, I just put new bedding on top of it. I like the idea of adding a little...
