They are about 1 1/2 yrs old. I haven't seen them eating on their feathers or acting strange, but will check for lice. Thanks for the responses. Also, the guy we bought these from, over a year ago, had a few different breeds. Could be possible of a mixed breed also.
So I've noticed a couple of my RIR's getting some blonde feathers. Googling tells me that's not normal. Could be a deficiency? Does anyone know what this may be and the cause? Thanks for any help.
All has been good for sometime now. No damaged eggs. It seems our reds use one nesting box most of the time. Lol I usually wait til late afternoon to get eggs and all 4 eggs are in one nesting box. Lol Anyway, all is good!!!
Luckily we don't get anything that comes close to the house. We have a 60lb spaniel pitt that runs loose. On nice nights, he'll actually sleep in front of the pen. Lol
We only have 4 RIR chickens, no plans for anymore, so we bought a TS special prefab. They've only been in it for 6 months now and it's holding up just fine. Of course I did do a couple things to it before adding the chickens. I thompson weather sealed the entire coop wood. I also sealed the...
I may see if I have enough hardwire to do an apron just for peace of mind. Can't really do anything electrical. Our free roaming dog likes to lay out by the run as if he's watching over the chickens. One of them pecked him once so he stays a couple feet away. Lol Plus the g-kids like to feed the...
So below is a picture of our chicken coop and run. Don't mind the feeder and waterer as I changed those out to 5 gal buckets. So we've had our chickens for 5 months. I occasionally have seen a racoon around but never near the house and coyotes never come near the property. We have a dog that...
We only have 4 chickens. I never see eggs in the morning. I use to check about 12pm and still nothing. I check again about 2pm every day and thats usually when I get all my eggs.
I use mulch in our run. They don't get a ton of rain being covered but the mulch sucks up what rain it gets. Then the sun dries it back up. I also throw in grass clippings when I mow once a week. We only have 4 chickens.
Congrats on your first egg. Our 4 started steadily less than a month ago. Our first one wasn't as nice as yours. I started mixing a little oyster shell in with their food and all has been good since then. Steady 3-4 eggs a day now. We even had one double yolker. Lol
