I think its lighting inside as the issue. Birds are very light aware and without light in the coop, ( did you say you had sufficient roosts?) they wont like it. If they already turned passive by the time you are moving them the. that’s past their bedtime.
Other ideas that may help with freezing water: take the water in at night to your basement so it won’t freeze, then put it out in the early morning. Works best with gallon waters.

Okay, don't jump to conclusions, Buffs hens can have combs that are a little larger. Is the bird dominant over hens? Do you have another rooster. If not, your bird will crow if a rooster.
