Yes, cover it. I live in the metro Atlanta area, where it gets plenty hot. I have about 400 Sq feet of covered run and my 29 Buffs spend almost all their time outside in the covered run. Its great for shade and when it rains, they love it. I used tin that I got for free from a friend of mine...
If I were you I would cover my run with a tin roof to provide full time shade, as well as cover against the elements. I have my coop off the ground about 2 and a half feet and they love to get under it when its hot here ( metro Atlanta area ). I know that in Texas you biggest concern should be...
I live southwest of you in the metro Atlanta area and I used a tin roof on my run, mainly for the shade in the summers. If you keep a eye out for used tin on Craig's list it could save you a good bit over what it would cost new. My run is over 400+ square feet and that much new tin would have...
I have a tin roof over my run, but the main reason is to supply shade in the hot Georgia summers. When it rains they love staying out under the run so I guess it works for that too.

My run post are 6 X 6's and I put chained link on one side of the 6 by and on the other side ( inside of the run ) I put up 36" galvanized garden fence so nothing could reach through the chain link and grab any of my chickens. The best thing I did to the run was cover it will a tin roof...
I don't think you have enough room for that many chickens. I have 32 hens and 1 roo that have 160 sq feet of inside coop and over 400 sq feet of covered run, I could probably have a few more, but I like having extra room for everybody.

I live in Georgia and our summers get hot, my coop is about two feet off the ground and in the mid day heat you'll always fine my hens up under the house in the cool shade that the elevated house provides. That's the number one benefit of the raised coop here in the hot south that I see.

I also live in GA and the heat of summer is a bigger concern that the cold of winter. I would cover my run area so that they will have shade in the hot summers[/img
I use FRM ( Flint River Mills ) feed. It's from Baimbridge GA and I like supporting the locals, I bet they have a feed dealer in your area that would love to get your business. I say lets boost the local feed sales.

I have a cedar tree that I cut down and placed inside my run, that's a Goodyear racing tire in the background, they love playing on that tire- redneck chickens I guess.
I have 31 Buff orps that will be 25 weeks this coming Monday. I got my first egg at 19 weeks and the number of eggs I get has been going up every since. Yesterday I got 22 eggs, so I don't think everyone is laying yet
but getting real close. I could tell that some seemed to mature faster than...
I have a 30 pound metal feeder that I have been using for 31 buff orps and its been great, how can your chickens be tearing up a metal feeder?

I don't have any pics but I can tell you what I used and how I did it. I used two 3' x 5' durorock tile backer sheets and angled them at about 45 degrees so that I could scrape the poop of of them to the lined floor. Once a week or so I shovel all the scraped poop into a bucket and then put it...
I have 32 buff orps that I got April 4th from McMurry and some of them started laying at 19 weeks. I am now getting about ten eggs a day and they were 21 weeks old on Monday. Some of them seemed to mature a little faster than others, getting combs and waddles sooner that others.
