It really is so much easier when you have more than one to look at. Then the differences are pretty obvious (for about 95%, there are always a few that you can't tell for a while yet). Last year I had one cockerel that I moved about every week to the pullet pen, then back to the cockerel...

    Hatching at high altitude

That's what I was thinking as well. I'll see if I can't get some pics tomorrow. All of the boys are still together in the bachelor pad, so taking pictures is a challenge at best. The girls all have nice combs, so maybe I would be able to get a bird or two out of them that have nice combs and...

I'm back from my adventures and trying to catch up. DesertBrahma give me a call when you have a couple of minutes free. Looks like everyone has carried on just fine without me. Question: I have 9 partridge cockerels. Two have very nice heads but not so much nice combs. A different two...

Agreed. I spent a lot of $$$ and effort, only to lose my entire flock to a couple of neighborhood dogs last year. Although I was devastated (as anyone would be) it gave me the opportunity to start over with the very best stock that I could find. I have found that joining the American Brahma...

If you hatch under a broody, remove the cockerels as soon as she leaves them to their own devices.

I'm afraid that any of my cockerels that have been around pullets after they are about 2 months old tend to fight a bit. I usually just let them work it out unless it is a huge problem. Usually it is only a problem if one is a few months older than the others, because he is bigger and in his...

I don't decide which cockerels are going until they are at least 10 mos old, usually around a year to 14 mos old. I usually decide in several different groups...first are the ones that obviously don't have what I'm looking for....those are the ones that go at the next butchering. That will...

I don't know how brutally honest I can be, but I can tell you what I look for. I'm talking here about what I will breed, not what I'm going to show. First and foremost I look for size. If they don't have the size, I won't breed them. Second, the head. At this age it is somewhat difficult to...

Mine start crowing usually at around 6-7 months. But, mine are also with an older cock bird, so some of them don't crow at all. He doesn't seem to mind if they do, but I think their hormones or something tells them not to push his buttons too much.

Does anyone know exactly what "lavender" is? Is it a blue gene with some sort of modifier?
