I've had my Smith lavender and blacks for about 2wks! I love the heck out of them. I had only one that hatched out of 5 set (gifted eggs from a friend). I was bummed, but I got lucky and got ahold of him right before his last hatch of this year! Yay! We did loose one of the blacks the night of...
YAY! Looks like I might have a broody banty! I would love to have about 4 eggs to set under her. Can anybody help me with that? I don't think I'll be able to find any on short notice on my own. I'm in south Louisiana.
That's what I was thinking too. I thought they would be EE and needed to be sure. Out of the 5 lav that I set, only one hatched. So sad and I was down for a bit. So I have my one lil lav, that I'm going to cal Val. Lol. I'm still on the hunt for another blood line to possibly pair up with my...
Thank you for your reply. I know lav is recessive. But is blue considered an accepted color by the APA (I THINK that's what it's called)? I'm only asking because if I want to get some of these, I want to be able to enter my kids in 4-H so they can show animals. Also, if I want to breed and sell...
I have seen some chicks that were blue that were from a lavender roo over white hens. They are just slightly darker than my lavender chick. In order to be considered "a blue", do both parents have to be from direct blue lines? Chicken genetics are so confusing!
Thank you for your responses. Phew! Been chicken crazy and reading all I can. Even my kids already know what I'm doing when they see me staring at my phone. Lol. They say, "what you lookin'at, chicken stuff?" I'm trying to learn all I can.
I have some hatching eggs that are white and splash over lavender roo. Since these are of two colors of ameraucanas, would the chicks be considered EE?
Also, how can I find information on breeding that is easy to understand for a rookie like me?
Thank you so much for your input. I went on lockdown last night and put a cup of water in my Styrofoam incubator, then took it out, then back again today (i couldnt make up my mind!) I spent all night and most of today going back and forth on whether or not that was a bad move. I did leave both...
How did your hatch go? I'm going on lockdown tonight and my air cells are on the small side. Did you keep your humidity higher or lower it during lockdown? I'm using an LG incubator from TSC and haven't been worried about the humidity till I saw those small air cells. I don't have a hydrometer.
What are the rules for breeding hatch mates? My babies are only 8wks, and I think I may hv male and the other female. I want to keep them both regardless of sex, but I'm not sure if I should let them hatch eggs?
Here are my 8wk old babies. Did the best on pics. I've pretty much come to terms that my white silkie may be a boy, according to stance and attitude. S/he is very rambunctious and has a smaller crest, although no real comb. My grey is very shy and barely moves much. S/he would rather just sit or...
Lol!!! I can't help laughing at him just laying in your lap like that!! That is priceless! Thank you for all the info. I just started keeping chickens in Aug.2013 and I'm hooked. I'll have to keep myself in check so that I don't go overboard! I'm trying to get educated about shows so I can one...
