I can relate @Countryhippie. I am in CT and wondered these things as well. Piggie-backing off others, they will drink what they need to and know how to stay warm. The chickens know how to chicken already, just gotta make sure you provide what they need to properly chicken. I was told over...
Hello indeed. I'm over in Litchfield county. Decent storm headed your way!
Thanks for the video, appreciate it. I'm not a huge fan of the heated waterer with wires in range of beaks. It was ok last year but I'd rather keep electricity away from the birds. Looking for something different...
Yea lol for the flock. I have a rain barrel to collect water and use to fill waterers with a hose currently
I want to install a system using PVC with nipples for automatic watering and was wondering if the water in the pipes freezes.
Thanks. 👍
Just wondering if anyone has a rainwater collection watering system in colder climates. If so, what do you do to keep it from freezing? I'm about to bust out the heater waterer, which I'm not a fan of. But it's gotta be done.
Thanks!
Hello all. I have four 12 week old EEs and 2 laying BRs close to 18 months. I have a few feeding stations set up, with the young hens feed in an area where they mostly go (higher up) and regular layer feed in the others. However, they all definitely eat each other's feed.
I read that layers...
Quick update:
We went ahead and put the three in the freezer, and the two remaining are getting along great. It was pretty neat to see that within 30 minutes of being on their own, the two were already working out the new order. I have not seen any pecking between them. They both have...
Haha. You've been following all of the dramas @aart! Honestly I'm not super optimistic. Worst case we have 5 in the freezer. I am going to use the little red coop and give the young'ns a small section of run and slowly introduce.
Yea I hope this works also. The three main offenders will be permanently taken away. Do you think the new 4, plus the 2 docile birds will form a new pecking order without excessive pecking? Is that a thing? We felt terrible that this all unfolded the way it did. Live and learn I suppose.
We have checked, and didn't find anything. We have one fully feathered bird, and then the rest have varying degrees of bare spots above the tails as you ride down the pecking order. I'm afraid the problem is now a habit, and we will be putting 3 in the freezer, keeping the two we never see...
Got us here 4 EEs, just about 8 weeks. We have 5 laying Barred Rocks outside, soon to be 2. We made some mistakes along the way with the first group, mostly space requirements. Even after remedying the issues, pecking persists so we are essentially starting over and gaining a few dinners.
So...
Thanks everyone for the input. We shall see what happens. May wind up waiting a while to add more birds, if at all. I've had pecking issues so I think it may be best to see how the current flock adjusts to the bigger housing they have for a few months.
I tend to agree with you. My concern is constant egg supply. When these I have now start to molt, won't they shut down? They're all the same age. About 12 months.
