So this story has a pretty happy ending i figured that was worth sharing - for anyone who has issues with chickens eating eggs.
For about a month we moved the younger generation to a friends house with a lot more space (empty coop that is made for 25+ chickens). After a few days they stopped...
I used a camera and confirmed the young girls are eating eggs. We are going to separate them to see if environment is the cause or if it is a habit they wont break.
It also looks like the older ones are picking on the younger ones trying to defend their eggs based off of the camera footage. So...
I’ve expanded the coop again and I am letting them free range almost all day. The older girls are still really picking on the younger ones. They now just pin them to the ground and bite the neck. I’m pretty sure there is blood now because some small flies seem to congregate on 3 of the 4 younger...
Spoke with the wife about it last night, we are gonna try to add one of those portable dog pens on one side with the bird net on top. That way itll add more room that is still easy to move once or twice a week.
That would definitely be consistent with not enough run space then. So maybe it isn't just a getting used to each other issue...
The problem is it will be tough to increase size since it is movable... I'll try to come up with something soon, but we have discussed sectioning off part of the...
Just part of the day, more specifically an hour or two on weekdays and most of the day Saturday or Sunday. .
I found my previous post about upgrading the coop for more https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/expanding-flock-do-i-need-to-expand-my-coop-and-run.1199576/
and the measurements I...
The setup is moveable and I move it once or twice a week. The coop is about 5’x6’ and the run about 5’x12’ (forgot exactly and will check when I get home)... but here is a picture from the webcam I keep on it.
I’m not sure but the last time I saw one go down, she was pinned behind the feeder...
I may need to start a new post since this is a little different, but things don't seem to be improving.
It has been a month now, and the younger chickens will not leave the coop unless the older ones are out of the run. If they do get hungry enough, they go downstairs and get tackled by the...
Thank you both!
Things seem calmer, they all go into the coop at night (except the head chicken but I think I made the door a little too small for her comfort... I can fix that)
During they day only the older chickens come down into the run until I open all the doors and they graze the yard...
Thank you so much for the response. It is definitely hard to stand back and watch.
I'll add all the feeding stations back in if they haven't picked up the waterer and feeder this evening.
Its chaos watching right now. But I don't think any blood has been drawn.
I'm a little concerned my older flock is scaring the heck out of my younger one, but no blood has been shed yet. I sought advice from this forum about new coop construction a few months ago and yesterday was the final joining of coops.
Context:
I've had a movable coop and run for 2 years now...
That is what I currently have actually (on a lever) but I don't think it would work with a larger wheel just due to the distance between the center of the wheel and the pivot point. At this point, I'm likely making it harder on myself then necessary. Still, it is fun.
My concern is more of if I get larger wheels, while it would make moving it easier, it could potentially increase the gap below the coop...
Thanks again for all the feedback, I'm looking forward to the redo.
Thank you for the great replies!!! A lot to think about here.
Building a second run or coop portion actually may be a really convenient idea... and I could modify the current one to where they can eventually connect (with some thought as you mention). This may also give me something to keep...
