    When I received my chicks from the hatchery, they sent a "surprise" one that has turned out to be a rooster. I cannot keep him. He is 11 weeks old, and a very sweet boy. Would like to find him a new home. I am in Bothell, Snohomish County.

    When I received my baby chicks from the hatchery, they included a "surprise" one, that has turned out to be a rooster. He is 11 weeks old and a Cochin. I cannot keep him and I am trying to find a new home. Any suggestions? I live North of Seattle.

    why can't I take them out of the brooder after a week or two?

    I just started with chicks, and I used the Chick brooder heating plate. I was worried about the heat lamp, and this was great. They used it until I put them in the coop about 5 weeks old.

    This one is one off 11 chicks I received. It has been the smallest and slowest to get feathers. Suddenly, the crown and waddle show up red. None of the others (Ameraucanas and Rhode Island Red).
