Breeds surviving vs succumbing to Marek’s

Yes! (wrt vaccine) Anyone willing to share, I think it would be interesting to know if your chickens were or were not vaccinated as we could look at these as separate groups (susceptibility with and without vaccination). Note that here I'm defining susceptibility as mortality. So far two of mine...

Breeds surviving vs succumbing to Marek’s

Thank you!! Just reviewed that one and FYI for those that don’t want to read the whole thing, the author suggests that the Egyptian Faoumi’s are resistant (as I’ve also read elsewhere) and that these are particularly susceptible. I’d be interested if others experienced bear this out (and also...

Breeds surviving vs succumbing to Marek’s

From those that have had Marek’s in the flock, it would be interesting to know how many chickens from each breed survived or didn’t - maybe that could give some idea of disease susceptibility. If you’re interested too, please share For us: Lost 1 BO (confirmed Marek’s) & 1 GLW (suspect...

    Beware about Hilltop farms

I have to add that I would not order from Hilltop Farms again. We ordered 4 pullets in 2020. One immediately came down with coccidiosis. We were fortunately able to get her to a vet to diagnose and treat. We also felt HF should have communicated better as she was listed as an Ameracauna but is...

Can chickens regain ability to walk?

Also if it is an injury it would have been from long ago - this has been a very slow decline - she has been a bit bumbly on her feet for maybe 2 years and declining (weight and mobility) for over a year. She was xrayed- no tumors or obvious answers.

Can chickens regain ability to walk?

Thanks so much for responding - here are answers to questions: She is 3 years old. She was laying well until she started molting (even as she was having a harder time walking). Her toes are curled. She will stand with some support and she will crouch a bit without support when holding onto my...

Can chickens regain ability to walk?

Our BO Nutmeg has been on a slow decline. Vet thinks possibly Mareks (yes she was vaccinated) but is surprised she has lasted this long. In January, she stopped being able to climb the ramp to roost so we put a box downstairs for her. In the last few weeks, she stopped walking at all. She still...

How much oregano is good for chickens?

In case it is helpful, we had a poultry vet out last week, and he suggested adding oregano oil to their diet. He has been raising and study chickens his whole life, inc a graduate degree in poultry science and a vet degree, so I trust him and will be looking into that. I don’t have recommended...

BYC Debate Thread- What's The Friendliest Chicken Breed?

I love all of our chickens but of our 4, The Easter Egger is probably the friendliest because she likes to hang around our legs when sitting outside or lay down by the back door - we call her our golden retriever. She is also very docile and more amenable to sitting on our lap. Our Buff...

Best groundcover for small "lawn" with chickens

Yes, Orange County CA :) I definitely think that moderating free range time will help - during covid, we'd let them out pretty much all day, but can't do that now that we are not able to monitor them as much.

Best groundcover for small "lawn" with chickens

Hi all - I was surprised not to find a thread when I searched for "groundcover"/ground cover. We have a small lawn area in a suburban back yard so between the chickens and some construction work, our lawn is definitely on its way out, and I'd love to do something to get it looking better before...

Coccidiosis - how to prevent moving thru flock

I agree - I've been cleaning up poop daily since the cocci started...and it's just a habit now so I plan to continue. I put ACV in their water in the plastic waterer - not in the metal one because I think it's not good in metal (plz correct me if I'm wrong!).
