Thanks everyone so much for the insight. We will have a roughly 40x25 fenced yard, 10x12 of which will be covered. Seems like we could get away with around 10-12 birds (which will probably be too many for our 6x9 coop anyway so we don't need to worry about having enough outside space).
Thank you all so much for the valuable insight. We do have some decent tree and bush coverage in the fenced yard. 10x12 feet of it will be covered and fenced, so I'm hoping they'll have some good hiding spots.
I do think I will want to keep my old ladies after their egg laying prime has ended...
Thanks for your input especially about the Faverolles. They were originally at the very top of my list but now I'm super torn because I've been doing some more reading about them being super dumb, not great layers, and the difference in quality between those from hatcheries vs breeders (vs with...
Thanks for your insight on the roos and your favorite breeds. Some of these are definitely going on my coop! We are planning to keep one roo for our ladies. Hoping we end up with one that treats them nicely. :)
Coop is 6x9 and I will have about 16 linear feet of roosting space. I was thinking that would probably be the limiting factor of how many chickens I get. I live in the midwest, but in the Black Hills so surprisingly mild winters with an occasional very cold bout so there may be short chunks of...
Hello everyone! I see a lot of 10 sq ft per bird for outside space, but haven't been able to get a solid answer as to whether this is covered run space, uncovered fenced yard space, or a combination of both. Can anyone weigh in? This is for chickens who will not be free ranging and who will be...
Hello! About to make the jump and put my first EVER order of chickens in. Our space will allow about 12 chickens. They will not be free ranging, but have a run of about 40x25 feet, and I could see myself doing some supervised free ranging one day if I did a bit more research on doing it...
Thanks everyone for your thoughtful and thorough replies already. I appreciate you sharing your experience, even when it seems like its news I don't want to hear. Appreciate your care for my future chickens and me. :) I will take a much more critical look at this list and cut it down to less...
Brand new chicken keeper very excited to get her first chickens! I’m looking to shave 2-5 hens out of the flock listed below, taking it from 17 to 12-15. I could really use some experienced advice about who to cut. A bit more context:
My dream is to have a mixed flock of about 1 to 3 hens each...
Brand new chicken keeper from the Black Hills of SD USA. So excited to have our first flock this coming spring! Have no breeds yet, but hoping to have a bit of an ecclectic mixed flock, something like 10-15ish chickens made up of 1-3 chickens of a variety of breeds. (But I'm not sure how crazy...
