Thank you so much, Buckabucka! The laundry basket is ingenious! Everyone talks about creating a playpen and safe place, but this is solid info I can use. We're still debating whether to get the eggs or whether to just start with four new chicks in a separate area, but I will definitely use this...
I have a different version of this problem. We had four hens but a fox managed to get in last night and kill two of them. One of our remaining hens has been broody for weeks and won't leave the laying box (we have two boxes). The other hen is wandering around the pen incredibly sad looking for...
Our chickens are a year old and about three weeks ago they started to sleep on their outside roosts in the corners of their run instead of going into their coop as they ALWAYS have. Every night I have to go out to put them to bed, one by one, because we live in an area with alot of predators -...
All these references to Andy roosters is making me miss mine. He was so sweet and comical, but my neighbors were complaining about the racket (all day long!) so I traded him for an older hen. The vet I traded with said her favorite rooster of all time was an Andalusian and she was thrilled to...
Congratulations!!! The first egg is the best. We traded our rooster for an older hen, so we got a jump start on eggs (our other six gals still haven't begun yet). Even though we've been getting eggs since mid-August I still get a thrill when I find one in the coop every couple of days. It's...
We got our chickens the same week and none of them our laying yet. I'm not expecting eggs for another few weeks to a month. It's hard to be patient, but the payoff will be awesome.
We have one Blue Andalusian but she hasn't started laying yet. (Hopefully in the next few weeks!) I'm curious what other more experienced chicken folk will say.
Our chickens ripped throough the grass in their run in about a week and now we have a dirt patch. Even when we put them in their mobile pen, the grass underneath it is damaged in just one day. I love the idea of planting grass, but I'm not sure it will grow faster than they ruin it. Good Luck!
So far so good with our six. They are happy, healthy and very friendly. We had to replace a rooster with an older hen and the transition went smoothly. At first the other chickens shunned her, but now they all get along and the older hen has replaced the roo for top position. When we first...
Thanks so much for sending me this link! Great story and beautiful photo! Even though I write for a living, I hate speaking in public. But I bet I could talk about chickens too. Looking forward to meeting all your ladies, including Miss Floppy.
We have a Blue Andalusian rooster born just before Mother's Day that we are trying to find a good home for. He is very friendly, and completely socialized as we have held him alot. He has only been feed organic feed and we are hoping to find a home for him where he will not end up on someone's...
