I had the 1/4" cloth around my aviary and coons ripped a hole in it to get at my button quail. I reinforced it with the 1/2" cloth and had no more problems.

Crumbles are an alternative. That's all I use because my girls won't eat pellets. I hang the feeder about 6" off the ground so there is little waste. If the feeder is on the ground they will scratch in it and scatter the feed all around the run.

You can use Sevin dust on the chickens to start getting rid of the bugs. Get a large, low sided pan and put DE in it. The chickens will take dust baths in the pan. Sprinkle DE in the coop, covering the perches and floor, and nest boxes. Make sure you use food grade DE and not the stuff you can...
I posted this on another thread but maybe you'll find it useful

My females seem to stop the constant "buckwheat" when the begin to lay. That lasts pretty much through the summer. When they stop laying they start the calling again. Summers are sooooo peaceful.

I was given 9 keets that were born on Sept 1 this year. They made the sweetest chirping sounds. Now the are almost 4 months old and they can be heard 1/2 mile away. They are noisey and if you have neighbors close by you better check with them before you buy, Don't get me wrong, they are a...
Well, it finally happened. Wednesday afternoon I noticed a commotion out in the pasture. My donkey was running and braying and the chickens were hotfooting it to the coop. I saw a hawk had pinned one on the ground. I ran out the door but the donkey and rooster scared off the hawk before I got...

We had a bumper year for snakes. Due to the heat I didn't see as many during the day as I had in the past but they were out in droves in the evening and early morning. The chicken snakes were playing havoc with the egg production. I've caught 7 so far. I had to deal with numerous copperheads and...
So far this year I have caught 6 rat snakes and 4 chicken snakes. Last week went in the barn and mice were all over the place as well as a 3' rat snake. I left him there for a day or so and still have mice but no snake. He's somewhere in the area. I have also seen several 12" rat snakes so there...
When you say "run" I assume you are talking about the area outside the coop. If so, straw might not be your best cover for numerous reasons. First if the ground is covered with straw it will act like mulch and the ground won't have a chance to dry out. That will lead to all kinds of health...
I would look at the leg color. Americaunas have a slate grey or greenish hue to their legs. Mine were a little older than yours' appear but they had indications of the muffs started. The group photo looks like there may Americaunas there but it is difficult to tell. Unless you want them for...
