Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

I'm still waiting on my order of Sand Hill IBs from last year. Got a call in Sept and was told they had gone broody most of the summer. I'm on the list for May now.

    What's your least favorite breed?

It's not that I don't like them, but I just don't get bantams (or Silkies for that matter).

    New Hampshire Question

Funny you mention that. I noticed recently that one of my NH pullets has blue/gray eyes. For what it's worth, she's the Roos favorite.

Statix, Excellent job, thanks for the pics. Caponizing is one of those things I've always wanted to do but haven't found the time / timing, but it just moved a notch or two higher on my 'must do' list. Keep us posted on the progress. Did you leave any 'baseline birds' for comparrison?

Quote: Brewed, you must be familiar with Alexandria. LOL... sorry about that, I know it was "cold". Yeah, I've been ice fishing on New Found a few times. The way this winter has been, school might be out before the ice. We're heading into mud season down here with all this rain...

Rhode Island Red vs. New Hampshire Red

Here is my understanding: Originally, New Hampshires were bred as dual purpose birds. At some point in the 40s and 50s they were primarily used as broilers so their egg laying ability stopped being a real consideration in their genetics.
