Thought she may have gone broody(not) watery poop and soft egg shells, lethargic.

I'm thinking it could be egg yolk peritonitis-but that would be quite the coincidence in two birds?

Thought she may have gone broody(not) watery poop and soft egg shells, lethargic.

I feel a time line is important here. About 8 weeks ago a predator took 9 of my birds, in the day time, while they were happily free range grazing and I was scrubbing out the coop. We closed the remaining 4 up in the coop. Two weeks later my Orpington decided to go broody. Perfect timing. I...

My free range hen is wandering far from the flock.

Any thoughts why she would be doing this? They normally stay within about 200 feet of the coop but she is not staying near the flock and wandering far away. She comes when I call her, doesn't have any injuries, her eyes are clear and is eating well. She is about 4 years old so this is very odd...

Adding silkie chicks to the coop with same age chicks.

Our 2 week old chicks are doing great in the coop with the big girls and "broody" has turned into a fabulous mama! My distant neighbour has silkie chicks the same age as my Chantecler...will she notice if I add some fluffy ones in at night? Any thoughts are appreciated. :D

    Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

These to poked out today! I'm desperate to lift her up to see if anyone else is there...she has 5 egg left to hatch. I have no idea what the gray one is. They were supposed to be all Chantecler (not that I really care) :D

how long can a broody hen be off her eggs?

So I was reading this thread early this morning with a heavy heart in an attempt to find some hope. On Monday the kids and I excitedly candled our adopted eggs. They are Chantecler that a generous farmer gave me for my buff Chantecler who went broody. It was day 6 and things were looking...

Thin shell from only one bird

Thanks but I was talking to a farmer today who believes my one chantecler is much older than I was led to believe 9 months ago. The eggs are smaller and vey pale when compared to her "sister". I'm not concerned about their diet and the idea of them being stressed is laughable! Great article...

Thin shell from only one bird

One of my 5 chickens lays a thin shelled egg every time. It's pale and often breaks when collected. They are are all 1-2.5 years old and have the same organic diet of feed supplemented with leafy greens, vegetable peelings and crushed egg shell. Thoughts?

    Sick or broody?

Thanks for the quick reply! She isn't pecking at me though and I've given her a good pet and prod to check for eggs. This is my first full year with birds and I'm a bit of a mother hen myself so it is my nature to worry!

    Sick or broody?

I have 5 hens. Two are buff chantecler. I got those two about 9 months ago and they were 2 years at that time and in full moult. Today, one of those girls started acting strangely and none of my 5 ladies has produced a single egg! She isn't laying but is resistant to leave the laying box and if...

    Winter is coming...

They sleep in the nesting boxes! Silly girls. Anyway, I did get the chantecler hens and roo. The roo passed away the first week. Rather quickly (read overnight) his comb withered and eyes clouded and he was panting and still. I disposed of him :( and the ladies, though in full molt, seem to...

    Winter is coming...

Thanks! We are in Ontario and the winters are typically -20 to -45 c. I have a heat lamp in the coop if it gets very chill. They seem so lost and lonely right now. Found someone with fantastic buff Chantecler hens and a white roo for sale! I'm really excited but need to figure out how to...
