I have all of those plus eagles in my area. I haven't had a problem yet. They put themselves in the coop at night, I count to make sure they are all in then close the coop an the run up for the night. The roosters are very attentive an warn the flock even if a sparrow is near an they all take...
I may have to try the snow for water method. It sounds so much easier than trying to make sure I can get home an give them water. Working anywhere from 13-16 hrs a day as a caregiver, even though it's for my mom, I can't always check on my girls several times a day.
My coop has a roof but their run, I guess is what you'd call it, doesn't have a roof. It's just a 20x20 fenced in area with a dog kennel door on it. In the mornings when I open the coop I just leave it open an they wander around in the basement of the old cow barn, pasture, or alfalfa field. I...
CindyR, I saw someone mentioned they just give their birds a few shovels full of snow. I was wondering if that would work just fine instead of dealing with freezing water. I have 42 birds total, possibly more coming next month.
Ok, good to know! Right now my girls an guys free range all day long. We live in farm country an their backyard is a 5 acre alfalfa field. Where the coop is, is sand so they are used to sand anyway. I dread cleaning the coop, sand sounds much easier than hay or wood chips. I thought about doing...
I'm really glad I found this thread! I saw elsewhere someone mentioned sand an I was wondering how well it would work in my 10x20 coop that has a cement floor. I'm using hay/straw whatever I can find for cheap. Its too late to switch before winter hits but I was wondering if anyone leaves the...
Not at this time I can't. The coop is still under construction an with my husband gone 6 days a week we haven't had time to finish the inside. I've had the flock with the silkie for almost 2 weeks now an the lady I got them from had 20+ others an hasn't mentioned any issues with her renaming...
Well when I went to open the coop this morning around 9:30am the silkie was no longer making any of the noises she was before. But 3 of my other hens were, one was still sneezing. I'm in the process of joining the two flocks together right now. They are still seperated but only by netting now...
I checked on her at 10pm last night an she was still making the noise. I noticed another one of my hens on the opposite side of the coop making the same noise, and another was sneezing. Only sneezed 2-3 times. I checked on them again this morning before I left for work at 3:30am an both still...
Checked on them at 3:15am this morning. Both still making that noise. Neither have any of the other symptoms you said to watch for. I checked the rest of the flock for the symptoms an none of them have any.
I just went an checked on her an another one of my hens is making that same noise. They are in the same 10x20 coop but seperated by netting since the silkie was 1 of 13 I got from a friend. I rubbed the silkie's throat an all she did was make the high pitched hiccup noise.
