Well, I had to put down ChickenHawk yesterday. She began really struggling to breathe and was obviously agitated and suffering.....I think the paralysis might have begun to creep into her diaphragm or other breathing control areas. I contacted the farm I bought them from to let them know and...
Yikes...that sounds a lot like my 7week old americana. The story with her is on another thread "Very sick chick...." I think I'm dealing with a case of Marek's, but there's no way to know for sure unless autopsy is done. I've been dealing with the work thing too...I work 9-6. So far she's...
Thanks for all the notes guys....unfortunately my internet at home is acting up so I couldn't get on last night or upload the pics of C.H. I've got....will try again tonight. Luckily for me, I've just got these ladies as layers/bug munchers for the yard so the problem of showing or selling...
Thanks for the reply....After doing lots more research, I really think ChickenHawk has got Marek's (as of this morning, she's still fighting tho!) I know the vet I spoke with said it is rare, but the symptoms are absolutely classical and she even matches the pictures on the web from the Merk...
Hi-
I've got a sick chick with paralysis and was worried it was Marek's...but talked to an avian vet who said true Marek's disease is "exceedingly rare". That might be true only for this area (central Va). I'm really sorry about your chicken, but have you considered having an autopsy done? If...
Hi-
I'm a newbie myself, but sounds like you might have a runt on your hands. Regardless, the chick would probably benefit from hand feeding/water....it will definitely only get worse if its not eating and drinking as much as the others to begin with. I'm dealing with a sick chick right now...
Hi everybody-
So the chick (who is now named ChickenHawk) is still pretty much the same.....her crop is definitely functioning now, but she's still pretty much unable to move (just flops around) and is still gaping and sneezing. I don't hear anything when she breathes (no air rushing, gurgling...
Oh yeah, she's in a comfy towel now....everybody is off the cedar chips and on just grass or horse hay (so no mold!) Her poops have gotten watery, but I wonder if that's b/c she drank so much water but didn't have food. Her crop is definitely getting back to normal! Thanks for the good...
Thanks guys for the information....I'm planning on calling a vet tomorrow, but seeing as it's Sunday....I can't stand sitting on my hands! Good news on the crop front though - after a few hours of no food and lots of water, her crop has gotten smaller. It's still very hard compared to the...
Wow...I had no idea cedar chips could be so dangerous....and I'm pretty sure my guys were munching on them and the hay when they were housed in the box in the house....the americana is most definitely the most vigorous forager of the group. I guess supportive care might be all I can do...
Sorry, I forgot to mention I have no idea if any of the birds were vaccinated for Mareks or anything else....boy, I thought I had done my research before getting these guys, but clearly not
Hi-
I've got an Americana ~ 7week old pullet/chick that has the following symptoms:
- sneezing (last 3 days) and coughing, w/ clear nasal discharge on day 1 which has since disappeared
- paralysis....started out as a limp yesterday A.M. and I though she had hurt her foot or leg. Couldn't find...
