Today was more segregation and low level tension between the 2 Chick Factions.... no out right fighting, just foot stomping and the occasional claiming of territory. The Australorps have claimed the rear lower section of the run and the NH Reds have the front. They both have access to water...
Night 3 -- still choosing not to huddle in the warmth and security of the coop. They can and do run up and down the ramp during the day I have even caught a few of them in the coop during the day. When it gets cold they huddle and hunker. Last night my brother grabbed half of each group and...
Mixed - results at best.
Added the Chicks 2 days ago. No behavioral issues when we mixed them together at all- they were clearly all in shock with the new environment. Before the end of the day however they had separated into their 2 distinct groups (Australorps and NHReds) in 2 separate...
I just finished building a 4'x8' Chicken tractor with a 4'x4' upper enclosed coop with solid floor and pine-shavings. I am adding a Cozy-Coop mounted on the wall for those cold nights.
We have 28, five week old chicks (12 Austalorp Pullets in one brooder, and 9 New Hampshire Red Pullets, with7...
I know I REALLY over built our Coop this last year (it was stick built and insulated, sided, and paneled inside). Our Coop is 8x5, raised of the grout about 2 feet, and about 7 feet tall at the peak of the roof inside.
I was also concerned about heat and cold here we are on the Oregon's High...
The other issue we had last year was DUST. They were so DUSTY last year when they started scratching and running around more... it was ALL OVER the garage. I may change over to pine shavings (I think they are less dusty) and do a little misting of them once a day to keep down the dust.
I am noticing (I think this was somewhat of an issue last year also) that out chicks are dumping almost half of their food on the floor of the brooder from scratching it out of the feeders; this food is mostly a wasted then. I have been told/heard to not worry about leaving the food on the...
The second pic is of 2 of the mystery cockerels in the middle with a pullet at the top of the pic. Also another Cockerel sticking his head our of the brooder heater.
Farm Store came up short on our Pullet Chic order and threw in 7 free Mystery Cockerels.
You can see the Boys here in these pics with the dots on their heads (they came with a blue'ish black dots); I took a red Sharpie and marked their heads to hopefully keep telling them apart. They girls...
Hello. Just a newer hobby farm chicken wrangler here.
We got 9 Autralorps Pullets from our local co-op farm store this past spring (2019) and raised them last year. Built them a overbuilt coop. They have been great. Really easy care and maintenance, with a deep litter method, and all 9...
